CIA Safe-House

Moscow, Russia

Arriving in Moscow on a commercial flight from Poland, the CIA’s top clandestine agent made his way through customs using fake credentials. The station chief left a car for him at the airport. As usual, they packed the trunk with goodies, including a 9mm Glock with amble ammunition.

Blake drove the nondescript sedan to the safe house on Moscow’s Northeast side. The landscape was gray, and the temperature was cold. Dirty snowbanks lined the streets with a cap of fresh powder from early morning snow. The wiper blades left streaks on the cracked windshield and hindered his view. Blake’s breath created wispy patterns inside, adding to the fog on the windscreen. He dialed the thermostat to high and hit the dash a fourth time, trying to get the heater working.

“Piece of shit.”

He glanced at his GPS. Being less than a kilometer away, he abandoned his effort at warming the interior. A quick drive-by revealed nothing out of the ordinary, so he continued two more blocks, traveled west, drove to the next street, and went north. After a couple more turns, Blake veered off to the side of the road and waited for three minutes.

He peeked at his mirrors for any kind of tail, then headed back in the direction he came. One hundred meters past the rear of the home, he stopped and paused again. Confident nobody had tailed him, he shifted to park, checked his weapon to make sure a round was chambered, got out of the vehicle and walked toward the safe-house.

The previous evening, two men drove Sofia to the location. Oscar and Sam were assigned to the Moscow office eighteen months ago. Their personalities were polar opposites. Oscar, a former offensive lineman for the University of Michigan, was from the inner city of Detroit, while Sam, a collegiate lacrosse player, studied computer science at Duke. The duo possessed a unique set of skills and together they were a formidable team.

They made the introductions to the group of agents on the detail to protect her until Blake arrived.

“Ma’am. We’re going to leave you now. You’re in expert care with these gentlemen. You have our number; in case you need anything.”

“Thank you.” Sofia shook their hands. The two men smiled. Oscar gave her a reassuring pat on the shoulder while he presented her with a card.

“This has all of our contact information. I know you wrote it down, but keep this in your purse as a backup.”

Grasping the card, she nodded. A tall agent in his mid-thirties approached her.

“Hi Sofia, I’m Roger.” He motioned for her. “Come on, I’ll give you a quick tour of the place so you can get your bearings.”

Located in the heart of the block, the quaint home exuded a cozy ambience with its humble proportions. Built after World War II as part of a rebuilding project, it sat among other homes of a similar style and size. The interior layout followed a conventional design: a modest living and dining room in front with a kitchen and bathroom in the rear.
