Chapter 3

Hannah entered the lobby of the hotel and walked toward the concierge desk. Her heart was beating hard enough to drown out the clacking of her boot heels on the marble. She had changed no less than four times before finally deciding on a pair of boyfriend-style jeans (with perfectly ripped patches, of course), a simple black off-the-shoulder T-shirt, an old leather jacket and black ankle booties. Just an outfit she would normally wear to visit with friends. For this meeting, she wanted to be in her own skin, not in what Drew would want to see.

She smiled as she reached the concierge desk. George, her favorite clerk at this hotel, was on duty this morning. “Good morning, George.”

“Hannah! Good morning to you! Are you working on a Sunday?”

She shook her head, her cheeks flushing as she responded, “No. I actually have an appointment with Drew—er, Mr. Sapphire at eleven. I’m a bit early though.”

She glanced down at her watch. She was a whole fifteen minutes early. Argh, now I look too anxious.

George smiled warmly and picked up the phone. “Let me call up to see if he’s available now. He just came back from a run not too long ago.”

She glanced around, taking in the sights and sounds of people making their way through the lobby, wondering where people might be visiting from or where they were heading to. George came around the desk and touched her lightly on the elbow, guiding her toward a set of elevators.

“If you’ll come with me? Mr. Sapphire’s on a secure floor, so I’ll just need to punch in an access code.”

“Of course.” She followed George and stood silently as they both waited for the elevator to arrive. He swept his hand out, inviting her to enter the elevator first. He held the door open as he quickly entered a code on a keypad, then pressed PH3 and stepped back out.

“Off you go then, miss.” He tipped his head and smiled as the doors slid shut.

Hannah raised a hand in goodbye and got out a quick thank you before the doors shut and the elevator started to rise. Her heart, which had calmed a bit while speaking with George, increased its rate with every floor she climbed. This was a moment she had hoped never to find herself in, but it would be unfair to herself, and Drew, not to give him some kind of closure to their weekend. She scoffed a bit at that. He was the one that had stormed out on her and left her alone and confused in his house.

The elevator came to a quick stop, a ding indicating her arrival, and the doors slid open. She took a deep breath before stepping out into the foyer of the suite—and right into Drew’s steely blue gaze. She stopped abruptly, a small gasp escaping her lips. Why does he have to look so damn delicious?

He was leaning against the wall, just feet away from the elevator’s entrance, wearing faded jeans and a light gray, fitted T-shirt.
