Sweat rolled down Aeron’s neck, the lights of the Playhouse blinking on and off around her. Bodies littered the floor. Most were from headshots, some from precise blade work, and some from the archaic boobytraps set throughout the maze. They all rested in a haze of red in her left eye. It’d taken some time, but she learned to look through the flashing colored alerts.

The layout of the Playhouse had been altered. Without Mason in the security room, a way to communicate, or a workable map—they were fucked. She needed to get to the catwalk, but finding the ceiling panels had proved difficult. Ivan hopefully had better luck than them.

She scrunched her nose and stepped past a smoldering body. The wall above it was singed, the flamethrower still lit within it. According to Mason, most of the boobytraps were single-use. Rufus loved the idea of resetting the traps each time. Thankfully, most had been set off by the Legacy Inc assets before they entered.

The door to her left creaked open, and she spun, gun raised, coming face to face with Decius. A green haze surrounded him. He had a cut across his cheek, and his face was flushed with adrenaline. They nodded and lowered their weapons, and a wave of relief rushed through her.

“This isn’t the same layout,” he said with a humorless laugh. “Where’s Katherine?”

Aeron shook her head. They’d lost track of each other as soon as they’d entered the darkened building. “Any luck finding the access panels?”

Decius shook his head and then looked up. He quirked an eyebrow and fired several shots to create a hole. “There’s one.” He smirked, and Aeron gave a short laugh. She should have thought of that.

“That’s one way,” she said. He cupped his hands, and she paused with one foot in them, her grip on his shoulders shaking just a bit. “Ready?”

He nodded, and boosted her toward the ceiling, but the hole needed to be bigger for them to fit through. She grabbed the edges of the drywall and started pulling. Running steps sounded down the hall. “Get on my shoulders.”

Aeron climbed, balancing on his shoulders as someone rounded the corner. She kept ripping at chunks of drywall to make a sizable hole. Dust fell in her eyes, and she swiped it away to see again. Pain seared in her left eye. “Fuck.” She squeezed her eye shut and kept digging. Decius took aim and fired. He missed, and the slide locked out.

The man sprinted toward them. Decius reached up, and without a thought, Aeron dropped her arm down, releasing a throwing knife. It slid from Aeron to Decius’ palm and then sailed directly to the throat of the man. He jerked to a halt, hands clutching his neck, then dropped to his knees. Aeron returned to the ceiling. She’d opened a spot large enough for her to climb through and could see the edge of the catwalk above.

“I see it,” Aeron said, grabbing onto the metal walkway, her shoulders and vest catching on the drywall as she pulled herself up.
