Chapter Forty-Six
Isabella struggled for sleep again, eventually lulled by the sound of the military equipment that rumbled beyond the window of her cell. She woke before dawn to the noise of movement outside the door, then slid off the bed and rinsed her face to banish the last remnants of sleep. She was drying herself as the door opened. The two from yesterday – Quayle and Ivanosky – were there. Ivanosky came inside, leaving Quayle in the antechamber.
‘Miss Rose,’ the old man said, ‘I’m sorry about yesterday. I lost my temper. I shouldn’t have done that.’
Isabella didn’t answer.
Ivanosky sat down on the side of the bed. ‘Did Maia speak to you about me?’
‘Yes.’
‘What did she say?’
‘That you worked with her.’
He nodded. ‘I worked with her for many years. I was very fond of her.’
He put his hands down and slowly levered himself upright. ‘You offered to take us to her body. You know where she is?’
‘I buried her. I know exactly where she is.’
‘And she was shot?’
Isabella nodded. Ivanosky looked as if he was still considering everything that Isabella had told them. It was clear that he was senior, and that he would be the one that would make the decision. Maia had predicted that he would weigh his curiosity against a natural distrustfulness, and Isabella found herself digging her nails into the palms of her hands as she waited, hoping that his curiosity would win out.
‘All right,’ Ivanosky said. ‘We will fly to Mexico.’
‘When?’
‘Now. Where did you bury her? Chihuahua, yes?’
‘South of there.’
‘Please, Isabella, one thing: don’t try to mislead me. I can be your friend, and you need a friend very badly now. If you take advantage of my friendship, I won’t be inclined to help you. There are people here who would be very happy to take you back to the Mexican police. There are other people here who think that would be too generous after the trouble that you and Mr Pope caused. But it doesn’t matter what they think. I make the decision. I can help you, but only if I think that I can trust you. Can I do that? Can I trust you?’
She looked into his eyes and held his gaze. ‘Why would I lie?’ she said. ‘I don’t have anyone else who can help me. I just want to go home.’
