GROUP 5 EXERCISE: HONING DIALECTS

As you began learning in Chapter 2, the ability to speak in dialects and accents offers you many new outlets for comedy. Audiences love comedy actors who can create characters from other countries and replicate their accents when speaking English, as well as their mannerisms, looks, and gestures.

To hone your skills in dialects and accents, spend time in neighborhoods where they are spoken. Pay attention to how the people move, their posture, what gestures they use, how close they stand next to each other when they speak to someone, the rapidity of their speech and the facial movements they make when speaking.

All of these elements of communication differ greatly from culture to culture. For example, when it comes to standing distance, Europeans tend to place themselves at a similar proximity to each other as Americans do. However, Arabs and Persians tend to stand very close to the person to whom they are speaking, practically nose to nose. Italians tend to gesticulate wildly, while Asians tend to stand rigidly and seldom gesture. Look for visual cues such as these that can make your accent or dialect be more authentic and allow you to fully embody that particular culture and speech. In the following exercise, you will have a chance to practice your accents and dialects.
