The Spared

The Queen was making 15 knots towards the incoming ships which were clearly in view at 5000 yards. Altogether, there appeared to be a dozen: a few private yachts, several fishing boats and far in the rear, several large sail boats.

The silhouette of the lead ship had a white hull and red stripe markings – she appeared to be a Coast Guard cutter.

The sea was choppy with swells four to six feet that momentarily hid a powered inflatable boat speeding away from the cutter toward The Queen.

Kevin Harrison was at the helm of the Queen and his father, Casey, was watching the approaching craft for signs of weapons.

“Kevin, full stop. We’re already well within range of a deck gun although I don’t see one. She’s a Medium Endurance Cutter… number … 624.”
