Chapter Twenty-Four

Edwin slipped into this new life quite easily. After all, it was essentially the life he had just left behind.

The first time he had reset had been a big change, moving from old age to being fifteen.

Making the transition from only ten years later was much easier.

The next few days, he just settled in to running The Silvery Moon. That had always been his one comfort zone and gave him an easy entry into this life. He discovered that he liked Bart, Linda, and Debbie, the three teenagers who were working for him that summer. The Silvery Moon seemed to attract a certain kind of worker, and the three of them were good examples of that.

That Monday, Edwin boxed up the reels of The Last Starfighter and Eraserhead. The second half of the double feature was typical of what he had booked in these waning days of the drive-in. Eraserhead had come out seven years earlier, which meant that the rental was less than the cost of a new movie. He had done everything he could to cut corners and keep the drive-in alive.

Edwin racked his brain, trying to figure out what to do with the heavy boxes that contained the reels. He knew there was no way he would be able to transport them on the bicycle, but he couldn’t remember how he had otherwise managed it in his first life.

The mystery was solved when the Federal Express truck pulled up to the gate and honked. Edwin hurried out and unlocked it so the truck could pull up to the snack bar.

The driver, a young, lean Black man, was out of the truck before Edwin could make it back to the snack bar.

“It’s easier if you remember to unlock the gate for me before I get here,” the driver said, squinting at Edwin in the morning sunlight.

“Right, right. Sorry, I forgot. Feel like I’m losing my mind these days.”

The driver waved that away with a smile. “Don’t worry about it, Mr. Miller. They just keep us on a tight leash these days. Next thing you know, they’ll figure out a way to track our bathroom breaks.”

Edwin hurried inside and returned with the boxes. “See you next week.”

“Hold on, I’ve got this week’s delivery for you.” The man—David, the patch on his uniform read—climbed up into the truck and returned with boxes that looked the same as those that were shipping out. He handed those to Edwin, who felt the same small frisson of pleasure he always did when he received the week’s new films. A little bit of Christmas morning every week during the season.

He hurried inside and opened the first box to find Gremlins. Edwin couldn’t help but smile. He thought it was not just a great movie, but a great drive-in movie. Slightly scary, but not so much so that parents wouldn’t bring their kids to see it. The second box had the reels for Blazing Saddles in it. Another older film, but one that lots of people didn’t mind watching again.
