THAT NIGHT, I RECLINED in bed as Eli put the tray on my lap. “Do you still not feel well? How long does that stuff last?”

“It’s out of my system. I’m eating in my room because dinner with Constance Wu and Henry Golding is always the right choice over the Raveners and the Angels.”

“I can’t believe those guys are really Horsemen.”

I dropped my fork. “How do you know that?” I hurried to sign. “Who told you?”

Eli stretched out at the foot of my double mattress bed. “Everyone knows. Even the freshmen talk, sis. Tatum said he met one once.” Eli acted like we were talking about a panda instead of a dangerous gang member. “His dad is a doctor who volunteers at a free clinic on weekends. The man came in with his sick son and Tatum’s dad warned him if he ever saw someone with an angel tattoo like his, he had to stay away.”

“Good advice. I wish we could.”

He shook his head. “How bad does it have to be for you to become one of them? Raveners are afraid to drive through the OB because they force nice cars off the road and rob them. They kill people, Ember. Those guys have to be smart to go here so... why? I don’t understand.”

“I don’t want you worrying about this,” I signed. “Whatever their reasons were, they made a choice. They have to live with the consequences. And you keep your distance.”

Eli shrugged. “Easy. I don’t see us having a lot to talk about. Unless one of those guys like Artemis Fowl too.”

“Don’t find out,” I warned. “I’m serious, Eli. Do not go near them.”

My brother rolled his eyes. “I won’t. You know I’m not your baby, right?”

I laughed. “Nope. You’re my handbag.”

Eli’s face scrunched up with a smile, but I regretted it as soon as it was out.

Dad used to say that all the time. When I was little, I was so in love with my new baby brother, I was all over the poor kid. I wanted to push his stroller, nap with him, and if he cried, my parents had to race to the nursery to beat me because I’d try to climb in his crib and comfort him. I wanted Eli to be with me all the time. “Your handbag,” Dad would say with his crinkly eyed laugh—so much like Eli’s.

I lowered my head, pressure building behind my eyes. The last thing Eli or I needed was to be reminded of him.

Eli squeezed my foot. “I’m going to catch up with Tatum. We’re studying in the library after dinner. Will you be okay?”

“I’m good. You go. Have fun. Make friends. That’s all I want.”

“That’s what I want for you too.” He popped up and gave me a hug. “See you later.”

“Night.”

I stared at my plate long after Eli left. Fun and friends weren’t in the cards for me. This was one of those moments. There were situations you stumbled into and you look around wondering what series of events brought you here.
