Mom is standing in front of me holding out her key ring. We’re on the porch of our new house. Her arms are filled with boxes, stacked so I can’t see her face. She reaches around the load, leaning, off-balance. “It’s this one,” she says. A silver key winks.

“Well?” she asks me. “I can’t hold this much longer.”

I take the key, look up at the blue door. “Joshua wants to do it,” I tell her

“You do it,” she says. “Joshua is too little and I have too much to do.”

“Where’s Dad?” I ask.

Mom’s voice gets louder. “Eleanor,” she warns.

I lift the key. The dangling ring seems very heavy. I try to push the key into the dead-bolt lock.

“It won’t fit,” I tell Mom.

She sighs behind the boxes. “Eleanor, just make it work.”

I decide to try the doorknob. I turn the key upside down, right side up. I wiggle the knob. Nothing works.

“Mom,” I say. “It’s not working.”

Another voice says, “I can make it work.”

I turn and there’s Ian, standing close. I back away from him, but Mom is behind me. I bump into her load of boxes.

“Eleanor,” she says. “What’s taking so long?”

“Here.” Ian holds out his hand. He wants the key.

I put the key ring behind my back. Not here, I think. Not my new house. Not my new life.

“What’s wrong?” he asks.

I just shake my head.

“Eleanor,” Mom snaps. “I don’t care what you have to do. Get us inside that house.”

Ian’s eyes are on me. I put the key ring into his big hand.

“Here,” he says. “Watch. It’s easy.”

He slides the key into the lock. It sounds wet, like someone getting stabbed.

“Trust me, Ellie,” says Ian.

Can’t breathe.
