10. VERGIL, AENEID 9.687–92

Vergil (70–19 BCE) was a Latin epic poet. In his epic poem the Aeneid, a night raid occurs on the Latin camps, during which a man named Euryalus, along with Nisus, moves through the camp but is cornered on the other side by horsemen and is killed. Euryalus’s mother reacts to his death even though she is far off and recounts some elements of ritual burial.

Nor did I, your mother, participate in your funeral, or close your eyes, or wash your wounds, shrouding you with the robe that, in haste, night and day, I toiled at for your sake, comforting with the loom the sorrows of an old woman.9
