Kiah trudged through the kitchen, his gaze skimming over the group still sitting at the huge wood table. Pies and cookies had been passed around and coffee poured. Conversation was at a minimum and even George was silent except for lips smacking.
Kiah stopped beside Hallieâs daed and crouched down. âMay I take a look at your buggy and see if I can fix it?â Given the circumstances, and considering that âacts of maliceâ remark from earlier, it probably was wise to ask permission first.
The older man frowned. âWell, now, Iâm not rightly sure if I can trust youââ
Ouch. But Kiah could see why.
âGo ahead and let him, Ted,â the bishop said with a hint of contemplation in his expression. âHe needs to be responsible.â
Not only that, but itâd also be a good way to get his mindâs focus off Hallie. Maybe.
Tedâs frown deepened, but he shrugged. Grunted.
Kiah decided to take that as agreement.
He was halfway to the barn before he remembered the woodpecker. And by then it was too late. The harsh churring sound came moments before the bird did a flyby, buzzing right past Kiahâs ear. Thankfully, the bird either had bad aim this time or he didnât intend to connect, but Kiah did duck as he quickened his steps to the safety of the barn.
He found Tedâs toolbox on the workbench in the corner of the tack room and dug through it for things he might need to replace the wheel; then he leaned the wheel nearby and started to jack the buggy up with an antique wagon jack.
âI saw the bird. We all did.â Bishop Nathanâs voice came unexpectedly from behind Kiah. âExcept possibly George.â
Kiah let go of the handle and spun around. âDanki for the complimentary heart attack.â
Though really he had expected the bishop to search him out. He just hadnât expected him to abandon his pie to do so.
The bishop chuckled. âAt least your folks believe you now.â
That was a plus.
Kiah turned his attention back to the buggy and the jack. He might not know much about buggy repair, but he did know how to replace wheels and tighten bolts. âWhat did you need to discuss with me?â Best get this scolding or lectureâwhichever it will beâout of the way.
âWhy exactly are you looking for the scribe? I want the whole story.â
Hadnât he gone over this at the bishopâs house at noon? He couldnât remember for sure what was said. âWell, it all started with a girl.â
The bishop made a noise that mightâve been a snort. âAll terrible stories do.â
What? Kiah glanced over his shoulder at the bishop.
Bishop Nathan raised his eyebrows. âGo on.â
âMy girlfriend stepped out on me when I was âchasing storms,â her words, in Illinois. Really, I was here to help with cleanup.â
âI remember why you were here.â The bishop knelt beside him and riffled through the toolbox as Kiah fitted the wheel back onto the buggy.
âCan you find a roller axle in there? Please. Oh, and I need a clip, too.â
âSure. When did you meet Hallie?â
âI met Hallie at her boyfriendâs funeral.
