Chapter Nine

“So that’s settled, then,” Keira sighed and placed the pen back on the table. “Tomorrow there’ll be Matt, Ash, and Sam at the house all day, and Daniel will be back about two. With Jordan not starting until twelve. I think we’ve got things pretty well covered.”

Matt yawned loudly. “Yeah, looks good.” He yawned again, and a couple of the others followed suit, making him grin. “Are we done? I’m knackered.”

Keira smirked and looked from Matt to Thomas, asleep next to him. “So is your boy. What the hell were you two doing while we were out earlier?”

Matt kept a straight face. “Would you like a play-by-play?”

She laughed, and for the first time since they’d met, Matt wasn’t intimidated at all. It had been better between them since they moved down here, but at that moment, he realised any unease had gone altogether. Keira hadn’t changed—she was still as abrasive as fuck sometimes, and terrifying when angry. But she was also funny and charming, and Matt knew without a shadow of a doubt that she would risk her life to protect everybody in that room. Including Thomas now. She hadn’t changed, but Matt’s perception of her had. He hid his smile; she’d go out of her way to tease him if she knew what he was thinking.

Thomas sighed in his sleep, and Matt glanced down at him, a curl of satisfaction settling in his chest at the way Thomas had his head turned into Matt’s shoulder. His arm had gone numb where it was wrapped around Thomas—he was a big guy, and the angle was awkward, but Matt didn’t care. “If there’s nothing else, I’m gonna get him up to bed.”

“That was a waste of time making up the spare room, then.” Daniel stood, straightening out his jeans. Matt stared up at him, confused. “What?” Daniel asked.

“Why was it?” Matt must be tired, because he wasn’t following what Daniel was saying.

Daniel rolled his eyes as he held out a hand for Jordan. “Because he won’t be using it now, will he?”

Oh. Oh. Matt hadn’t thought further than how he was going to get a sleeping Thomas upstairs. Thomas had about twenty pounds on Matt, judging by what Matt had seen earlier. Actual sleeping arrangements hadn’t entered his head. “Um….” Perhaps that was something they should have talked about earlier.

Daniel let it drop, but he did give Matt a pointed look, which Matt took to mean “you need to talk about these things.” He waved Daniel away. While he might be new to this whole mates thing, he wasn’t stupid, and he had dated before. He watched the others file out of the room, returning their goodnights, until finally the living room was empty.

“Hey, Thomas.” Matt gave him a gentle shake. Thomas grumbled and swatted ineffectually at Matt’s hand, but didn’t open his eyes. “Hey.” Matt shook him again. “It’s late, and we need to go to bed.”

This time Thomas yawned and blinked a couple of times before focusing on Matt.
