Chapter 7 –

Trina

Trina had hugged the new mom, kissed the new baby, then begged exhaustion to head back to her space. She'd forgotten, or possibly never realized, how many emotions a person could feel being in the same room as a woman giving birth.

There had been so many things that could go wrong, so many things that were a surprise, like the way Mintonar touching Molly had eased her pain in ways the best medications on Earth couldn't have. How many more things were they going to learn about the way they interacted with the Orvax?

The whole thing made her tired and she didn't want to think about it anymore.

It was Christmas Eve and she was on the space ship. She wanted to be on the space ship. Not only was she living out a dream she'd never dared think was possible, she was using skills she'd spent a life time mastering to help other people.

Absently, she rubbed at the back of her hands. They ached less with the influence of the bionanos but even the best alien technology couldn't reverse the effects of aging and spending all her time manipulating small needles and cranky fabric. It wasn't as bad as it had been when she was on Earth but it was still disappointing that she couldn't get away from the pain even with alien technology.

It might have been the late hour on a holiday but she was feeling every minute of her fifty-five years and it struck her how many of those minutes she'd spent alone. Her daughter had been out and on her own for almost a decade and had spent a lot of the time before that with her father. As good of terms as she'd been on with her ex-husband, a large part of why he'd been her ex had to do with how lonely she'd been living in the same house with him.

Most of the time, she liked her freedom and didn't feel the sting of loneliness quite so acutely as she was that night. The video call with her daughter and granddaughter in the morning would go a long way to make her feel better. She just had to get through the night.

While she'd intended to go to her workshop, she found herself wandering towards the lounge. Kaelin had mentioned setting up a Christmas tree and, while she might personally skip putting up a tree some years, Trina wanted to see the tasteful decorations Kaelin's mother had sent.

The shiny gold and cream ball ornaments didn't surprise her, nor did the teal and gray snowflakes, but she wasn't expecting the reindeer, gingerbread men with horns, and ballerinas with lavender colored hair. Trina was very glad Margaret was on their side and dedicated to making sure her daughter was happy. Her attention to detail was occasionally scary.

Garland over the view screen continued the theme and Trina's eyes caught on the mistletoe that had been hung over the walkway. It was the perfect place for it and an ideal spot for publicity pictures of happy human-Orvaxx couples.
