Exercise to Explore Inhibition: Chairs

A very common tendency for an actor is to rush, racing along too fast through the text. Inhibition can be a great help with this. I observed actress Olympia Dukakis give a master class where she taught the following exercise that supports inhibition.

Preparation: Choose a monologue or piece of text to work with. Place two chairs near you in a cleared space.

1. Sitting in one of the chairs, start speaking your text.

2. Every time a thought changes, move from one chair to the other. Continue working through the piece, changing chairs each time there is a change in thought in the text.
