âThat was so much fun,â I said after he eased into the driverâs seat and closed the door.
He grasped my left hand and placed two fingers on my wrist.
âWhat are you doing?â I asked.
âChecking to make sure you admitting that didnât kill you.â
I pulled my wrist free while laughing. Again. Nobody could make me laugh like he did.
âWhatâs next?â I so didnât want this day to be over. Every trip for my past birthdays didnât compare to this one birthday with him. âMaybe we can find someone to drag race?â
He smiled and turned onto his right side to fully face me. âThereâs something Iâ¦actually need to tell you. I probably shouldâve told you when we were still at the beach. But itâsââ His face became crimson. âItâs kindâve embarrassing.â
I turned onto my left side to fully face him and couldnât stop myself from saying, âIt canât be more embarrassing than what happened in the rink.â
He cracked a smile. âThis is a way different kindâve embarrassing.â His face stayed crimson while he seemed to be searching for the right words.
What he wanted to say must be serious. He rarely had trouble speaking his mind.
âIâveâ¦had a crush on you. For a while.â
Waitâ¦what did he just say to me?
The smile Iâd been wearing all afternoon left as I stared at him while blinking rapidly. Then I decided he was screwing with me. âRight. Since when? That day I kidnapped you?â
âA little longer than that.â
He looked at me, and his serious expression made me frown. Which didnât feel right after so much smiling and laughter.
âShane, what are you talking about? You didnât even know me before a few weeks ago.â
âThat doesnât mean I havenât noticed you.â He cleared his throat, that I now knew he did when he was really embarrassed. âIâve had a crush on you since freshman orientation.â
It took a few seconds for his confession to penetrate my brain. But as soon as it did, I slowly angled forward and sat up.
What theâ¦Freshman orientation? I barely remembered that day. I then eyed him over my shoulder and, if possible, his face had turned redder.
âHow? You really didnât know me back then.â
He hesitated before saying, âYou walked into the auditorium, and Iâ¦thought you were the hottest girl Iâd ever seen.â
Now I felt my face turning the same color as his. But his compliment did make me smile.
I sat sideways, bent my left leg and tucked it underneath me. âThanks. Iâmâ¦really flattered.â I smiled softly, which seemed to help his embarrassment. âBut why didnât you talk to me? There were a lot of us who didnât know each other. I only knew Ella and Quinn.â
âIâ¦tried thinking of some reason to talk to you after orientation. But I know I wouldâve looked and sounded like a dumbass.â Our eyes caught. âThen I started hoping weâd have a class together. Which we never have. Kindâve weird, right?â
I nodded, then frowned again. âWhy couldnât you talk to me? I was a newbie like you.â
He paused, then said, âDonât.
