CHAPTER SEVEN

YOUR GENETICS ARE EVERYTHING

When it comes to the way you look, although your genetics aren’t absolutely everything, they are 75 per cent of the equation. I know this chapter is called ‘Your Genetics are Everything’, so feel free to absolutely kick off about the clickbait nature of the title, but I’m a YouTuber so what do you expect? You can’t buy a goldfish and then be annoyed when it starts swimming around its tank. It’s a goldfish, mate.

Anyway, fish are rubbish, let’s get back to genetics. They really are fundamental in determining the way you look. A lot of people don’t realise this, or perhaps for people with unfortunate genetics it’s just less depressing to pretend it’s not the case, but it is. The places on your body where you hold the most fat, the shape and symmetry of your muscles, your ability to build muscle and lose fat in the first place, and your physical traits such as speed, strength and cardiovascular endurance, are all limited and to an extent determined by your genes. So, to put it simply, if your parents are overweight, chances are that you’ll be overweight too. Now, that’s not to say that you can’t override this genetic disposition and build an amazing physique, because you 100 per cent can; I’ve seen countless examples of individuals who’ve done just that. But the unfortunate truth is that it’s probably going to be harder for you than it is for someone whose parents are absolute athletes.

We all know we’re supposed to make the most of what we’ve got and play to our body’s strengths. I reckon if you asked the average gym-goer, they’d be able to identify their body’s assets and weaknesses without hesitation. When it comes to flaws in particular, you could probably reel off a list right now. And the pressures of social media and the crazy comparison culture that it breeds make you even more aware of all the tiny so-called flaws and imperfections you possess. Yet as we saw in Chapter 6, one of the issues with social media comparisons is that, in the majority of cases, the fitness influencers you aspire to look like they won the genetic lottery. They inherited incredible genes which gave them the ability to build muscle, maintain a relatively low level of body fat and possess a ‘perfect’ physique, which, realistically, the average person will never attain. It’s just not a level playing field. In some ways, I think this has contributed to the idea that anyone can have an eight-pack, huge arms or gravity-defying butt cheeks, as long as they do the same amount of work that an influencer does. Most people, especially younger individuals, believe the message that they’ve been sold: with the right exercise and the right diet, anyone can achieve anything. But here’s the harsh truth: that’s a lie. You can’t. You simply cannot train to get someone else’s body. That’s not how it works. You can drastically improve your own physique
