Now Delaney leaned forward. “Oh, in your case I’d say you’ve got about a million reasons. Probably a lot more.”

“And they are?”

Delaney turned the pad upside down so Billy could read it. He started checking off items on the first page. “Book rights. Movie rights. Exclusive interviews. You don’t really think this whole affair will just end when you let everyone out of here, do you? Hell, they’ll be signing up the latest teenage heartthrob to play you in the movie of the week. And after your face hits the cover of every magazine in America next week, every publisher in New York will be bidding for your life story, every Hollywood studio will be throwing bushels of money at you for the rights to put your life on the screen.”

Delaney looked up at the kid's eyes, which were as alive as he’d seen them. He’d set the hook, so he continued. “And unless you have a lawyer to read the fine print and lead you through the legal minefield, you’ll walk away from this with nickels and dimes. Chump change. They’ll take you for a ride, chew you up and throw you away like a piece of gum. To them, Billy Parks is just a product they can market. Trust me, Hollywood has no soul and they will lie through their teeth to get what they want from you. They could care less what happens to you after they tell your story and sell it. And I assume, since you just told me you won’t spend a day in jail, that you do want to spend the rest of your life as a rich young man. I can make that happen for you in a matter of days. And I'm sure you've noticed that rich men often have their choice of women.” He saw the smile begin to grow across the kid’s face. It was time to reel him in. “You’ll have so much fame and fortune that little cheerleader over there won’t even make your top ten list.”

Billy turned away and looked at Reese Talbot. He turned back at Delaney and smiled. “You mean...”

“Oh, come on, kid. Remember that rich old bag of bones Anna Nicole Smith married? You think she went after him because she got turned on by the smell of Ben-Gay? Money is the world’s most powerful aphrodisiac. You think beautiful babes married Larry King because he’s a good conversationalist?”

Delaney could see the wheels turning in the kid’s eyes. “So, how much do you think my story is worth?”

“Sky’s the limit, kid. Like I said, we’ll create a bidding war. One for the book, one for the movie rights. It’s a daily double and you can’t possibly lose because publishers and producers will be tripping over themselves to get in line. We might even put you on the lecture circuit for twenty grand per appearance.”

“Twenty thousand dollars just to talk?”

“It happens all the time, kid. Billy, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity. You don’t just give it away because this will never happen again.
