Basics of Handgun Shooting
(Safety and Fundamentals of Handgun Shooting)
Safety
There are three fundamental rules of safe gun handling:
1. Always keep the gun pointed in a safe direction.
2. Always keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot.
3. Always treat all firearms as though they are loaded.
Safe Storage - Locking mechanisms include keyed locks such as padlocks, combination locks, simplex locks â buttons pushed in a specific order or a variation of this with finger pads â and biometric computer-controlled fingerprint reader for cases, lockboxes, and safes. The best lock will be different for each personâs individual circumstances and needs.
Fundamentals of Handgun Shooting
Successful handgun shooting is based upon the fundamental principles of marksmanship.
Aiming is the process of aligning a handgun with a target so a bullet fired from a handgun will strike the desired target. In other words, the point of aim should coincide with the point of impact. Aiming consists of sight alignment and sight picture.
Sight Alignment means proper positioning of the shooterâs eye, the rear sight, and the front sight in relation to each other. With the notch and post system on most handguns, proper sight alignment for precise shooting occurs when the front post is centered laterally in the rear notch and aligned for equal height and equal light.
Sight Picture refers to the relationship between the handgunâs properly aligned sights and the target. Visual focus with iron handgun sights should be on the front sight making both the rear sight and target somewhat blurry.
Breath Control is a method used to minimize movement due to breathing by holding your breath for the few seconds required to fire the shot. Maximum steadiness is achieved within three to eight seconds and the shot is fired within that time period. After the shot is fired within that time period, the shooter relaxes, resumes breathing, and begins the process over again.
Hold Control is the method by which both the body and the handgun are held as still as possible during the period of time when the shot is fired, primarily through a proper grip and a well-balanced, stable shooting position naturally aligned with the target.
Trigger Control refers to pulling the trigger without causing any movement of the aligned sights. One of the most important shooting fundamentals, trigger control involves gradually increasing pressure to the trigger in a rearward direction until the shot is fired to produce a surprise break in which the shooter canât predict the exact moment at which the handgun will fire. The surprise break prevents the shooter from anticipating the shot, disturbing the sight alignment and sight picture just before the shot is fired.
Follow-through is an effort made by the shooter to integrate, maintain, and continue all shooting fundamentals before, during, and immediately after firing the shot.
Prior to mastering the fundamentals, the handgun shooter must address two other critical aspects of technique: hand/eye dominance and grip.
Hand and Eye Dominance
Shooting any firearm involves coordination between the eyes and hands. For the majority of people, best shooting is accomplished by firing the gun with the dominant hand and aiming with the dominant eye.
