Chapter 32

McKeown, Grant and Dee had spread photographs over the table in an empty conference room along the corridor from the Serious Crimes suite. Now they were trawling carefully through them. Dee had a magnifying glass and was searching the faces of people in the background of the pictures.

Gawn opened the door and walked in.

‘Any progress?’ she asked.

‘We think we’ve spotted Dr Norris’ car.’

McKeown handed Gawn a picture so she could see for herself.

‘Have you been looking through all these photographs? Take a break and I’ll see if I can get digital copies for you.’

‘Thanks, boss.’

The three detectives made their way out of the room heading to the canteen, glad to get a break. Gawn stared thoughtfully at the picture in her hand. She was still in that pose when Maxwell opened the door and walked in.

‘We’ve pulled the team out of Ardenvohr Street,’ he informed her.

‘Good. Can you get on to someone in the PPU, Paul, and ask them to send their surveillance photographs digitally? Boyd’s already okayed it for us to look at them. We really don’t need to destroy another rainforest to do it.’

‘Will do. And they’ve found our burglar, Frank Campbell.’

‘Great. Now for some answers. Are they bringing him here?’

‘No. They found him on waste ground near the docks. Just about alive. He’s in the ICU at the Royal. They don’t know whether he’ll make it. Whoever these people are, they don’t like leaving loose ends. And Jenny’s definitely one of those.’

The look they exchanged said what she couldn’t put into words.

An hour later when Gawn was making her way through the squad room to speak to Maxwell, she found McKeown, Grant and Dee all busy at their computers.

‘Thanks, boss. We got all the surveillance pictures. We’ve made a start on them but there’s a lot, hundreds. They’ve been watching the house for weeks.’

‘They sent everything over?’

‘Seems like it. Yeah.’

Gawn was about to tell her sergeant to ignore everything except the ones from Newcastle when something made her stop. If they had the photographs, they might as well check through them all. They might get lucky and be able to recognise someone else associated with their case. If they could identify some of the other men, she could take the pictures to Tilly and see if she’d seen any of them before, and they could question the staff at the mortuary and at Jenny’s apartment in case anyone had been hanging around watching her. It was a long shot but they didn’t have much else at the minute.
