CHAPTER THIRTY-THREE
MADI LED KAITLYN AND Shayne through the covered walkway, each with an armful of missing person flyers. Before they reached Main Street, Sergeant Bryant contacted Shayne with the results of the reported kidnapping at River Street and Main. Shayne hung up and delivered the news. The woman being forced into an SUV by two masked men was, in fact, an eighteen-year-old girl fooling around with her beau in the backseat of a black Jeep Grand Cherokee. The police suspected the girlâs former boyfriend phoned in the report in a fit of jealousy. Madi shivered, then punched the vinyl siding of the candy shop. I wanted it to be Mom.
When they stepped out of the covered walkway, Madi told Shayne to take Kaitlyn and pass out their flyers on the other side of the street. âIâll handle this side. Ask the store managers to hang the flyers on the front door or in the storefront window. Give them to people on the sidewalk as well. When youâve finished, meet me in the town square.â
âShouldnât we all stick together?â Shayne said.
âIf we split up, weâll get done in half the time. The shop owners know me. Iâll be fine.â
Madi took off, focused on her destination four blocks ahead. She darted in and out of shops, restaurants, and galleries. Not all store managers wanted to welcome their customers with a missing person flyer on their front door, but they all said they would hang it somewhere in their shop.
This isnât going according to plan. I need the flyers displayed on every door or storefront window.
She expressed that need to the shop owners on the second block, and they all consented to hanging the flyer out front, though only one hung it right away. I should have brought a roll of tape.
Back on the sidewalk, her body sweltered under the midday sun. Not a single cloud was left in the sky to curb the vicious heat. When she stepped into Bakers Delight, she heaped praise upon her friend, Bruce, for having switched on the air conditioning so early in the season. The counter was so packed with customers that he gave her a roll of tape and she hung the flyer herself. When she slipped outside again, the heat hit her like a gust from a blast furnace. She needed to catch her breath, and her feet begged for a rest, so she plopped her grumpy body on a vacant bench at the curb. Where had yesterdayâs cool breezes of springtime gone?
Madi studied the faces of the people passing by. Someone must have information about Mom. I just have to find themâthen make them talk. Kaitlyn and Shayne walked into the movie theater across from her. The aroma of buttery popcorn floated over Main Street in a current of humid air. So pastries in the bakery werenât torture enough? Hunger pangs gnawed inside her. When Shayne and Kaitlyn reappeared, Shayne held all the flyers while Kaitlyn munched on a giant chocolate bar. She snickered.
