Chapter 15 –Water, Water Everywhere

There was no way that Pedro could know what lay in store for him with regard to the weather, except he knew September was the peak of hurricane season and the sky to the south had been looking darkly ominous. All he could do was swim, kick and paddle, as best as he could during the nights, then rest, sleep, hide and scrounge for food during the days. He could see the tower lights of several working platforms on either side and directly in front, but still miles ahead. Everything seemed so far ahead – shore, a good meal, safety, his future and hopefully Teresa. He came close to paddling directly into another darkened structure that might have provided a sanctuary, but he had only been back in the water a few hours. He was tempted but decided he should not stop. He needed something closer to dawn, closer to shore and hopefully to another abandoned platform. The rain came down harder, but if he had to paddle straight into broad daylight, a heavy rain would be his ally.

Paddling and kicking became automatic. He had never felt so alone, so detached from the human race or so far from any help. He even imagined for a few ridiculous moments that he was a bottle nosed porpoise, separated from the pod. He had felt alone in large city crowds and been alone in remote jungles of backcountry Colombia, but never had he been so self reliant, dependent solely on his own alertness and physical stamina. There was no world as he had known it, just water and sky, and even the sky was full of falling water.

Pedro also passed much of the time thinking about Teresa – reviewing the extreme differences of their backgrounds and the few bedtime stories they told each other about growing up, at least those he could relate that wouldn’t shock her. Their heritages were so different and she with a college education, wanting to be a teacher. Every day with her since leaving Cartagena had been like magic and every night the best loving he had ever experienced. Their passion was real instead of a physical release or an act of male subjugation. For a man who was used to taking everything, the slow tenderness was a new giving experience. With himself and Teresa, neither lover wanted to make the intimacies ever end. Even the several hot sultry nights on board the trawler, sharing each other’s sweaty passion in the small damp bunk, was nothing short of wonderful and caused him to paddle and kick harder. Pedro’s desire to be with her again grew with each mile. He was learning that love was a powerful force. It could drive men crazy; make them do crazy things. He knew that famous love affairs had caused great men to fail or even cause wars. His love, right or wrong, would have to carry him to Mexico and perhaps beyond.

After several more hours, he came to another abandoned platform with only the super-structure standing.
