A huge stone fireplace dominated the room where they would meet. A comfortable conversation pit with maroon colored leather couches faced the fireplace. Kintrell put his finger to his lips and twirled his right index finger. Roddy broke out two small boxes and handed one to Stryker. They ran the boxes over every inch of the room, searching for listening devices. They found none. As Kintrell watched them, he thought of something President Reagan was fond of saying: Trust but verify.

Once they were all seated, Alvarez apprised them of her conversation with McGriff.

Roddy and Braithewaite thought she should just stall for time.

Kintrell listened to the arguments till Stryker said, “You know, this might be the perfect opportunity to grab Halloran. If we can get him to come to Philadelphia.”

Kintrell had the same idea. “Norm’s right. As I recall, Lanny, two of those elevators in the FBI building go to the basement. I think I can get Hoppy to hack into their system so we can not only control the elevators, but also the various security cameras …”

Roddy interrupted. “Yeah, Tom. Halloran’s obviously going to have a couple knuckle draggers with him. We’re going to have to immobilize them while they’re in the elevator, then we’ll need a distraction of some sort …”

Braithewaite chimed in, “If we can make them enter a certain elevator, I can be on top of the car with an anesthetic compound. I should be able to pipe it in through the escape door on the top of the elevator. The elevator could then be directed to the basement …”

Stryker now: “Maybe we can simulate a fire or maybe someone in the building had a heart attack. Two of us can be decked out as EMTs. An ambulance pulls up at the loading dock, they hustle inside with a gurney, strap the fucker down …”

“Yeah, that could work,” said Kintrell, thinking. “Only problem is, if he has guards in the back of the building, we’ll have to somehow immobilize them also. Then we’ll need a safe house to take Halloran for questioning. We’ll have to make sure he doesn’t have any locator bugs on him.”

The team massaged the plan for the next two hours, then Alvarez placed a call to SAC McGriff.

“Listen, boss, I’ll talk to Halloran, but the only place I’ll feel safe is our office in Philadelphia, I won’t go to D.C.,” said Alvarez.

“I hope you know what you’re doing, Lanny,” said McGriff.

“Me too, boss,” said Alvarez.

“Lanny, I’m worried about you. I know how you feel about Tom, but you must remember, he doesn’t have a career to lose, like you,” said McGriff.

Lanny thought of the irony of that statement. About the risks Kintrell took to see that justice was done. About what he’d done to protect her from harm. She wanted to say a lot of things to her boss about Kintrell but the less she said, the better, for everybody.

“I understand, boss, but again, the only place I’ll consent to be interviewed is in our Philadelphia office,” said Alvarez.
