"I'm telling you, Taign. Something's not right. I can't figure it out. Things aren't adding up. My father would never let things get this bad. He wouldn't tolerate shoddy workmanship and neglect. Something strange is at play here." She paced the living room floor as she mentally searched for answers.
Taign rose from the couch and laid his hands on her shoulders. "I've got to agree. But wearing a path into the rug isn't going to help things." He looked down at the braided oval rug under Sally's feet. "Frankly, we don't know how long these problems have existed. Who's to say some of them didn't happen a month ago as opposed to yesterday? We've simply got to face them one at a time."
He settled Sally on the couch and sat next to her. When he put his arm around her and held her close, a comfort quieted her chaotic thoughts and she leaned into him for support. Distracted by his firm grip, she tried to think about what he said. Taign had a point. Who knew how long ago the equipment and pipes had been ignored? During her father's funeral, Sally had been too wrapped up in all the arrangements to be worried about a bog she hadn't expected to take care of. Only when she decided to save the place did she develop a vested interest in its condition. Losing her father made her realize how important the bogs were to her. They had been, and continued to be, the one constant in her life, her one true home. That's why she'd found it so difficult to find it in such disrepair when she came home for the funeral.
During that time, a few neighbors had promised to keep an eye on things while she sorted through what to do about the place. Even John Merchant had offered a hand, probably to watch things until he could purchase the place, she feared.
John had never spoken of any problems. And Casso had never mentioned any of these little disasters on the grounds. Casso cared as much as she did about the land. He certainly wouldn't tolerate any tampering. But when it came to John, she couldn't help but wonder if the problems had happened rather recently. And the antics of the kids on the dirt bikes didn't help matters either.
She didn't want to think about it anymore. Instead, she wanted to indulge in the feel of Taign's arms around her. She rested her head against his shoulder and wished he'd never let go. It was the same wish she'd had so many years ago. She'd never experienced the kind of feelings with any other man that she felt with Taign.
"Why is this bog so important to you?" he asked.
"It's all I have left. It's my roots."
"You know, you barely have enough land to get by, let alone make much of a profit."
"I realize that. Lord knows one frost could mean a Chapter Eleven." She leaned back to look at him and frowned.
