This easygoing behavior was a bit out of character for him. Looking at him with wide eyes, I replied with a smile. âI heard that it grows in only three weeks. Itâs amazing.â
âOh, so these are those seeds,â he commented.
âYes. They said all I need to do is water them at the right time.â
âHmm,â he said.
âIâm going to give these to the fairies.â I was racking my brain desperately. What should I do? I canât think of anything crazy I can do right now!
âThe fairies?â
âYes. I want to grow the fruit quickly and give them away. I wonder if the fairies will like them.â Trying to think of things that would make him want to dump me, I answered cursorily. It wasnât a lie, and it wasnât like heâd believe me anyway.
I didnât notice that he was looking at me, thinking, She is indeed crazy. After some silence, he quirked his lips up as he watched me water the seeds carefully. I had a feeling that he didnât even realize that he was smiling.
I looked up just then and flinched at the sight. It felt like I had seen something that I wasnât supposed to. Trying desperately to hide my embarrassment, I finally thought of something crazy to do.
âN-now that I think of it, Your Majesty.â
âHmm?â His eyes met mine, still smiling, the slight curve of his eyes looking beautiful.
Carefully observing his eyes, I said very seriously, âThis is my land now, isnât it? I want to charge a tollâ¦â Hehe. It was my land! I had the right to confidently say that I wanted a fee! âA fee. May I?â
The tyrantâs gaze was getting blearier by the minute, and I didnât like it. When I suddenly felt sad and let out a sob in the middle of my smile, his lips tightened as he made a strange expression and spoke.
âI see. You want me to pay you a toll.â
âNo, itâs not like Iâm insistingâ¦â
âYouâre not?â
âOnly when you come. If you come. Iâm just saying I might if you do.â
This might get me killed if I was not careful. But I pondered. If someone obviously crazy and foolish enough to believe in fairies was also arrogant, didnât that make it perfectly logical for the emperor to end the engagement? Still, this tyrant kept smiling.
âFine. Letâs write a new contract.â
âWhat?â I raised my head quickly. I hadnât finalized the contract yet, so I could rewrite it.
âMy lady, how does cutting the price of the land by half suit you?â
Half! Forgetting everything I had been up to, I took the bait.
âW-whatâs the catch?â
âMy right to pass through. What else would it be?â
âYouâll only be passing through? All the fruits I planted here will belong to me, right? And everything that comes along with the fruit.â
Thinking about the time Iâd sell the fairy stones, I also wanted a definitive answer that all the byproducts were mine.
âYes.â The tyrant nodded, looking like he felt pity for me.
âHooray!â I shrieked in joy, laughing brightly.
And while I was on it, I did some twerking to ensure that he wouldnât want to get close.
