CHAPTER THIRTY-FOUR

Plowing a Furrow

It was an early start the following day, as preparations for the brick’s descent to the planet took place. The original plan called for Rachel to fly the ship, but they didn’t even ask her to get involved. She was going to stay in the medical bay, with both Michelle and Anya, who originally were going to be taken down to the surface first on the shuttles. As it was, Aaron and Tre were going to get a little help from Tino which left Dan, Jada, Rosa and KJ to be the ones waiting on the planet. One shuttle was left with them. In the event of a disaster they could then return to the front portion of the ship. That, or collect emergency supplies to try and create a life on the planet.

A hill about two miles from the landing site was picked for the four of them, which was just on the north side of the river. Aaron had given them all powerful binoculars, so they could keep an eye on things. Dan was a bit disappointed he wouldn’t see the ship within a ship detaching. He was assured the brick just slid out down underneath the ship to then be guided down and it wasn’t an exciting thing.

The group kept a line open to the brick, so they knew when to start peering through the binoculars and it was Jada who got the first sighting. She pointed up and after a few seconds Dan managed to pick up the ship. Well, it wasn’t a ship he was seeing, just the heat of entry and it looked like a massive fireball. Dan didn’t think the shuttles produced that kind of heat, but then he hadn’t seen them from underneath. The red glow around the ship faded away to leave a clear view of its dark underbelly, showing up clearly against the blue sky.

The brick wasn’t the right name for the ship in terms of shape. It was more of a block shape, but it was more aero-dynamic at the front, with a sloping nose which contoured right out to the edges of the ship. The tip of the nose was the bridge. Although Dan couldn’t see inside he knew Aaron, Tre and Tino would be fighting hard to fly this monster. The ship had two long and wide wings, which opened after the brick separated from the main ship. The main engines were at the rear of the ship, with six thrusters – three on each side – low down on the ship. They would help it to slow and land smoothly in the right place. Like the wings, these extended after separation and could also be stowed after landing.

Dan moved the focus of the binoculars out to get a full view of the ship. There seemed to be some turbulence, which they had been expecting due to the size of the ship. Nothing was said as the ship descended and indeed the tension was palpable.
