I stared at Bella, more than a little confused. I’d just told her about the job.

A tear glistened in her eye, tearing my heart in two.

“Bella, what did you think I was going to say?”

She blinked, then wiped her eye.

“Bella…” I prompted.

She gazed at me, her face filled with pain.

“That you were going to end my contract.”

Her words were like a punch in the gut. Did she really believe that?

But she said it with such certainty, I knew she did.

“How could you think that? I’ve told you how much I want you. How just being away from you for a few days drove me to distraction.”

“That’s it. Our arrangement was supposed to alleviate your distraction, not heighten it. Based on that, it makes sense that you’d decide to let me go.”

“Bella,” I said gently, stroking her soft cheek. “You’re assuming that all you are to me is a sexual outlet. But that’s not true. You are so much more than that.”

She gazed up at me, her eyes wide. “Like what?”

I smiled. “You’re a fantastic assistant. I’m not sure how I survived without you before. And you are a beautiful, sexy woman whom I’d like to get to know better.”

The fact I felt that way should have sent me running for the hills. This was only supposed to be a casual office romance. But it was becoming so much more than that.

“That’s why I offered you a full time position.”

She bit her lip in that cute way she had. Then she drew in a deep breath.

“Mr. Elliott. It’s very nice of you to say those things, but we both know you had to offer me a job after that deal we made with Mr. Hawthorne.”

Goddamn. The realization sank in that the woman had thought I was going to fire her, yet she’d still offered herself up to help make this deal happen.

I’d known how much she wanted a permanent job. Enough to offer herself as an incentive to me. How could I not have realized how her insecurities would prey on her when I told her I had something important to discuss, then just kept the conversation on hold?
