A few minutes later, Cortez lay in Ash’s arms, his breathing just barely back to normal. His ass was going to be sore if he took him again. He hoped he did because this was their only night together. The only night he’d ever have with the only man he really wanted.
“You were so good, Ash,” he murmured as he stroked his chest. “Everything I knew you’d be.”
“I feel the same way.”
He was too quiet. Cortez wanted to scream at him. He could feel Ash retreating, the ice closing around him, and he wanted to cry. He kissed Ash’s chest and caught the cool silver medallion around Ash’s neck. “Do you always wear this?”
“Yes. I had it designed five years ago.”
He rose on one elbow to get a closer look at it. “It’s a dragon’s eye. Do you believe in magic?”
“Kind of,” he answered. “It’s a symbol of protection as well as the four elements.”
“I like the extra touch you put on it to make it yours,” he commented. He kissed his chest again. “The bind rune. Do you practice?”
“My grandmother was a witch,” he said. “She liked to dabble and taught me a few things, but I’m not some powerful witch or anything.”
“She raised you?”
“Yeah,” he said quietly.
“Were you close to her?”
“Not particularly, but she took care of us.”
“Is she still alive?”
“No.”
Cort wanted to ask more about their mother and if Ash had ever thought of finding her. He wanted to know if he hated her for leaving them. However, Ash’s face closed up and Cortez decided to leave the sensitive topic alone. “Ash, stay with me for a little while.” He tugged the chain lightly. He knew he had to be careful. He could get hurt bad if he tried to get more from this man than he knew he was willing or capable of giving him.
“Careful. Don’t break the chain.”
“If I break it, can I have it?” Cortez asked in a teasing tone, and rolled onto Ash. He looked down at him, bracing himself on his hands on either side of his body.
Ash stroked a hand over Cortez’s back. “Don’t push that tonight,” he said tiredly.
“Sleep a little bit. You look tired, honey.”
“I can’t.” Ash’s lids lowered as if on command. “I still have some work to do, and I need to be home in case Ashley needs me.”
“Because staying with me would kill you,” he said and rolled off him. “I understand.” He climbed out of bed. He didn’t want anything to happen to Ashley, but he wanted one whole night with Ash for himself too. “I’m going to take a shower. Will you lock the door on your way out?”
