Chapter Twenty-nine
Ted made a quick call to Kevin Turner to tell him he was running slightly late for their drink but would meet him in The Grapes in about ten minutes.
âIâll give you fifteen. If youâre not there, Iâm coming to arrest you for wasting police time,â Kev told him cheerfully. He did seem to be in a slightly better mood than he had been.
Ted sat back down at his computer and began searching for rolling news feeds which might mention something related to the message from Harry. He took it to mean that Harry had now received delivery of the witness Mr Green had sprung from custody.
Eventually he found a live item with a news reporter doing a piece to camera in a well-known central London location.
â⦠known only as BRIOCHE. The groupâs name is believed to be a reference to the French revolution. The people behind it are understood to have revolutionary tendencies, with a stated aim of bringing down the Government. A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police would say only that they are aware of the groupâs existence and that it has come to the attention of their Counter-Terrorism Unit.
âLittle is known of the identity of the alleged witness other than that itâs a woman, known only as Witness X, believed to be a person who was being held in a Cheshire prison. That person was unlawfully taken from custody on a routine medical visit in what the police described at the time as a professional operation.
âThe statement from BRIOCHE claims that the woman was a witness at a number of events at which highly-placed members of the Government were in attendance while children were being abused. It is thought that she has named at least one senior member of the Cabinet in her allegations.â
Ted muted the sound on his computer as his mobile rang. An unknown number. He answered guardedly.
âYouâve heard the news, Gayboy? Delivery made.â
âIâm just watching it online now. Explosive stuff.â
âIâm going to tell you something now. If it goes any further, I will know, and I will find you. You know the rest.â
Ted did know. And he believed him. Mr Green was not someone you messed with.
âIâm retiring. This was my last job. I got back in touch with my family. I havenât seen them for years, but Iâve always supported them. Iâve discovered I have a grandson. One of my daughters has a little boy. Robbie. Iâve never met him, of course. Itâs time I did.
âI did this last job at a cut-price rate. That tin-pot bunch of pretend revolutionaries could never afford my prices. But itâs time we finally wound up the bunch of bastards behind this kind of stuff. All of them. And now I know I have a grandson, it matters to me.â
Ted was staggered by what he was hearing. It was probably the longest speech heâd ever heard from Green, unless he was delivering instructions at a training session. It showed a side to his character he had never imagined was there.
