THE PHONE fell from Christian’s hand and tumbled to the floor like it weighed ten tons, and Christian just didn’t have the strength to hold it anymore. What was the point anyway? CJ didn’t want to talk to him, didn’t want to hold his hand through the stormy weathers of Christian’s perpetually changing life. Why do you still care? If CJ couldn’t stand beside him now, why did Christian think he could in the coming weeks, months, and maybe even years? CJ didn’t offer a support system. He offered four-lettered curses spit in anger.

And you still love him, don’t you?

Love was such a strong word, too strong in reference to CJ. Lies.

Christian pushed up from the edge of the bed, reached for his jacket and the keycard to his room, then headed out for a walk. He didn’t bother to pick up his phone. No one he wanted to talk to right now was going to call him. In fact, CJ made it pretty clear they’d most likely never have another conversation unless it involved school.

Christian made a mental note to get CJ a new advisor.

Minimal contact would be better for them both in the long run anyway.

Outside, Tennessee was nice and humid for spring. Hot because it was always hot around tornado season. Humid because it seemed to rain nonstop for an entire month. The crops needed the rain, though. Farmers normally spent their Sundays in church praying to God for a few good downpours. Then, when their prayers were answered in abundance, they complained. God couldn’t seem to please them.

Christian would’ve been happy just to have CJ love him, or at least like him until they could both grow into something more.

Grow. Christian snorted. He was grown. Had an easy fifteen years on CJ, in fact. Apparently, what he needed was someone mature enough to understand everything couldn’t be the way one person thought ideal. Life didn’t revolve around ideals. Understanding and acceptance were a part of life. Well, ideally.

“You’re losing your mind,” Christian said to himself, shaking his head as he crossed the parking lot. He had his mind set on sitting in the Starbucks down the road and watching traffic go by because it was so much better than sitting in his hotel, waiting for the impossible to happen, reflecting on how he’d ruined everything with CJ—and for what, a God, a church, and a family that didn’t really know him or accept him?

At least, in a big city like Nashville, he wouldn’t be reminded that everything revolved around religion in the South. Small towns closed down on Sunday so everyone had a chance to worship. Cities were more eclectic and diverse. It was still the South and still very much a part of the Bible Belt, but Nashville… well, it seemed to be more accepting, even if by a little.

He stepped into Starbucks, and a handsome, tawny-haired barista shot a smile his way. The kid had to be close to CJ’s age, didn’t have the first wrinkle, and still had the glow of loving life.
