I toss my bag carelessly into my bedroom after walking into my dorm. “Lee, is that you?” Aubree shouts from her own room. The door is wide open, so I walk right inside. She’s sitting on her bed facing the mirror along the right wall, fixing her curly brown hair into a cute top bun.

“What’s up?” I ask with a smile, leaning against her doorframe.

“I wanted to talk to you.” She responds through the mirror; I don’t respond with anything more than a smile and a lifted brow. “I, uhm…” she stumbles over her words, and I can already hear what’s coming. “Lee, you’re one of my best friends. You and Cass are all I’ve got, really—besides Wes.” Her eyes shift and she resituates herself on her bed, turning her attention to me. “But Wes, he… he’s a really great brother. But he’s not really great at the whole personal relationship thing.”

I nod. I love Aubree for looking out for me and caring, but she doesn’t need to worry about me. No one needs to worry about me, I’m doing great all on my own. “I know, we talked about it.”

“I just don’t want to see you get hurt.”

I step into her room, taking a seat next to her on her fluffy white duvet. “I already know how Wes feels about relationships. I don’t want to worry about a boyfriend, I have to worry about school, but that doesn’t mean I can’t have fun.” I bump my shoulder into hers.

“Ew.” She laughs, leaning back into me. “It’s just our parents are pretty shit at being married and he thinks that’s how all relationships are.” She starts playing with her hands in her lap and my stomach dips, anticipating her next words “He pretty much wrote off love and every other emotion along with it. He pretends feelings don’t exist, but he’s…” I watch Aubree take a deep breath and I feel like she’s going to share things that I should hear from Weston and not his little sister.

“Should I even be hearing this?”

She shakes her head and offers me a sad smile. “No, probably not.” Anxiety rolls through me. “Just… maybe be careful with him too, he’s more fragile than he lets on.” When she finally looks at me, her eyes are big and pleading like a puppy dog and my heart cracks. She’s worried about her brother just as much as she’s worried about me, maybe even more. My heart warms at how honest and loving Aubree can be, giving her whole self unapologetically. I wrap my arm around her, pulling her in for a hug.

“What are you guys doing?” Cassidy asks, stepping into Aubree’s room.

“Bonding.” Aubree laughs, pulling away and grinning at Cassidy.

Cassidy smiles back, crossing her arms and rolling her eyes. “Well, do you want to bond over some coffee? I’m desperate for caffeine.” A laugh bubbles out of me as Aubree stands up, pulling me with her.

We all leave our dorm and head to the coffee shop across the street from the university.
