âSlow down,â I said as Brian two-wheeled his shiny black Camaro into the parking lot of the yacht club.
âWould you quit being such a nervous Nelly, Con? Besides, you know I like my cars and bikes fast and my women fasterââ
âStop the car. There she is.â I rolled down the tinted window and leaned my head out. A cacophony greeted me. Seagulls squawked, waves crashed, and tourists squabbled about the inanities of holiday life. Fresh-cut fries and the myriad of smells from the nearby fish shack assaulted my senses.
We sat idling in the humid evening air. Meredith stood beside a large yacht. A silver Lincoln Town Car pulled up in front of her, and she walked toward a tall, dark-haired man holding open the passenger door. My mood plummeted to the depths of Lake Huron. Meredith smiled at him and exchanged a few words before getting into the car. He closed her door and walked around the front of the car with confidence. He didnât get in so much as fold into the driverâs side and drove off. Brian put the Camaro in gear and swung out after him.
âSo, youâre sure you want to go through with this?â
âYes.â It was all I could do to choke out the word. I couldnât believe Iâd let him talk me into this, but I had to know the truth.
âOkay. Here we go.â
We hit the highway, and Brian maneuvered his car a couple of cars behind the silver sedan. He started to whistle as he followed at a steady pace.
âYouâre enjoying this, arenât you?â My voice matched the black thunderclouds shadowing my face. I tried to keep a handle on my hair-trigger temper, but I was losing the battle.
âA bit, but thatâs not why Iâm doing this, Con. Iâm concerned for you, man, and I donât want to see you get hurt.â
âWell arenât you all sweetness and light.â Battle lost.
Brian didnât seem disturbed by my tantrum. Of course, he never did, and it was one of the reasons our friendship endured. He was the only person I knew who seemed unfazed by my many moods.
âIâll tell you what, bud,â Brian said, âif this ends up being purely innocent, Iâll never interfere in your life again. Agreed? You bloody well know if you thought I might be screwing up, youâd do whatever it took to set me straight, so donât fuck with me on this.â
I lapsed into a silent funk. I reminded myself yet again I was going to have to get a better handle on my emotions. Questions swirled through my mind. My guts churned as I thought of Meredith lying naked beneath the Adonis. No doubt, he had a much larger prick than I did. Or maybe it was the domination thing. What was she hiding from me?
Maybe I should have been more forceful. Maybe she wants it rough. But would I like it rough?
Brian resumed whistling while he followed the car into the darkness of the country highway. There were few cars on the road but enough to hide his pursuit.
