Chapter Three

Lucas fumbled for words as he looked at Ciel, who had come to say goodbye. Agatha dusted the shelves in the corner, pretending to ignore them, but Ciel had said she knew what had happened. Lucas felt even more shame because of that.

“Do you know how many stupid things I’ve done when I was angry or hurt?” Ciel said.

“Did you hurt people you cared about?”

Ciel nodded. “Yes. I’ve said some horrible things over the years. Things that can’t be taken back.”

“I’m sorry for everything.”

“And I’ve already forgiven you. I just couldn’t leave without saying goodbye to everyone.”

“What did you tell the girls?”

“That Erik’s father needs me. They understood.”

Lucas nodded. “All right. Will you write to us?”

“Yes. And I’ll be back for your celebration.”

“You will?” Lucas couldn’t help being surprised at that.

“Yes.” Ciel glanced at Agatha. He lowered his voice and said, “You aren’t the first person I’ve had to get over.”

“Who?” He recalled what Ciel had said the night before. He’d had many partners, and he’d even slept with a vampire.

Ciel shook his head. “I have to have at least one secret.” He extended his hand. “There’re no hard feelings. I swear. I’m going back to the place I grew up. I’ll be content there.”

Lucas shook his hand and held it a moment. He wanted his friend to be happy, not merely content, but there was nothing he could do about it at present. “Thank you. Take care.”

Ciel turned and left the room, and Lucas sank down into a chair. He waited for Agatha to turn around, and when she didn’t, he asked, “Did I say the right things?”

Agatha turned to him and gave him a once over. “You think there’s a magic formula for healing the hurts we give each other?” She shook her head and moved toward him. “I’ve known Ciel a long time, and he’ll be fine. I don’t like that he’s leaving, but I think it’s for the best.”

“My sisters love him so much, and it’s my fault he has to go away.”

“Yes, I suppose it is. But he was pretty obvious, even though you couldn’t see it. Heather’s commented on it before.”

“Yeah, she said something to me. That’s how I saw it.” His curiosity growing, Lucas asked, “Who was he talking about when he said he’d had to get over someone before? I don’t remember anyone special.”

Agatha shrugged, but Lucas could tell she knew who it was. She knew everything that went on in the castle. “No idea.” She fixed a sharp gaze on him. “Gossip can be very hurtful. I’d let it rest unless he tells you himself one day.”

Lucas nodded to show he understood.

“It’s sad he’s going, but better to have him far away so there’s never any gossip regarding you.” She tousled his hair. “Relationships take work, love. You can’t fly off the handle every time something doesn’t go to plan.” She moved toward the door, throwing one last glance back. “It’s a hard lesson you’ve learned, and it’s practically cost you a friend.
