Chapter Four

That night, the Feast was unlike any other. Three of us had been Chosen. That was the most that had ever been selected in nearly twenty years. The town was elated. Everybody brought out their best to send us off. The food, especially, was amazing; even better than the night before.

They’d pulled out all the stops. The farmers had been saving their best cuts for tonight, just like they had every year, and the bakers had been working around the clock to supply us with the most succulent desserts they could imagine. There were pies, cakes, and cobblers. I was in love with what I was told was rhubarb pie. The flavor exploded over my tongue with every bite. It was fantastic.

It was strange, though, being the center of attention. I was used to be overlooked. I liked it that way. It allowed me to come and go as I pleased. Having everyone look at me all evening was a little unnerving. My mother, on the other hand, was ecstatic. She’d dressed me up in a beautiful, cream-colored gown that brushed the ground when I walked, and put a ring of flowers in my curled hair. I felt like a princess.

Which, I reminded myself with a sudden lump in my throat, I guess I sort of would be. As much of a princess as the human consort of the Crowned Prince was allowed, anyway.

It still hadn’t really sunk in yet that it was all real. I had been Chosen. And by none other than the son of the King. I blushed a little as I thought of my future mate. Damien. What would my life be like with him as my partner? And what in the hell was that strange flutter in my stomach? Was it nerves? Is that what caused my heart to race at the thought of him or was it something else?

With my luck, I was probably just coming down with something. I scoffed. Wouldn’t that be delightful? ‘Hello, Your Majesty. Thank you for the opportunity to change my life. Please excuse me while I wipe the snot from my nose.’ Yeah, right. Great first impression.

Although, that wouldn’t be our first conversation, would it?

Yet, before I really had a chance to dwell on the thought, I was whisked into the crowd of dancers by Will. His face was flushed from exertion and his eyes glazed from drink, but his wide smile covered his entire face. His hands were sweaty in mine as he swung me around in circles, but I couldn’t find it in me to care. This was great. This was normal. My carefree laugh echoed around us and I let him swing me around his back and flip me over his arm. Will could be loud and obnoxious at times, but there was no denying he was a damn good dancer. Even I had to admit that I had a bit of a soft spot for him. How could I not? He was goofy as hell and half drunk more often than not, but he had a good heart.
