Chapter Eight

A sharp sweet tang rouses me from the blackness. I peel my eyes open, feeling the ache within them. Well, within every part of my body really. I shouldn’t be awake again. Not judging by the sticky feeling of congealing blood against my skin. Hmm. I’ve probably been out half an hour at most. Not long enough for the worst of my wounds to completely stop bleeding, but long enough it’s not pouring out of me anymore. Which is a start.

“I see you’re coming around,” Ravi’s voice breaks through the haze more.

I snarl, snapping my eyes open and baring my fangs to him. The noise coming from me isn’t one I’m familiar with.

“That worked even better than I’d planned,” he adds.

I cock my head to the side, studying him and trying to work out what he’s done. And what’s causing the sweet tangy smell. It’s oddly familiar.

To my surprise, he holds up a hand red with blood. Did he stick his hand in my wounds? I hope not. That’s verging on a violation of my body. The memory of his secret tugs on my attention.

Right. His hands are the least of the violations for me to worry about.

“You look confused.”

I don’t answer him. For some reason, I can’t. There’s a block on me that doesn’t want to shift. Rather, it wants to take complete control. It seems to think I can fight the burning inside me.

“I appear to have brought your inner beast out to play,” he says with a smug smile on his face.

My inner beast? What is he on about?

It takes me a few moments more to realise he’s actually right. There is something different in the way I’m feeling. Maybe I’ll let whatever it is out to play.

Ravi studies me like he’s not sure what’s going on. That makes two of us. I want to snarl and yell and break through the binds holding me. In fact, that sounds like a great plan.

I pull my arm away from the board I’m strapped to. The leather begins to creak as I tear it away. As soon as I realise it’s working, I start on the other one, hearing that leather begin to break too.

I’m not too sure what’s giving me the strength I didn’t have before, but it really is coming now. There’s something spurring me on that wasn’t before.

And I think I know what it is.

My eyes fixate on the blood coating Ravi’s hand. It’s not mine, I’m pretty sure about that. Which means it must be his. And that he’s a fool for thinking waking a vampire with the scent of blood is a good idea.

The wrist straps break at the same time and I use my newly free hands to undo the strap around my waist. The cuts and stab wounds have become a mild irritant. I know they’re there, but they’re not the first thing on my mind anymore. Far from it.

The straps around my ankles are next to go and I’m free.

Free.

I mean, I’m also not thinking straight and can barely stand, but at least I’m out of the binds.
