Tanner hadn’t heard the second conversation between Deena and Hudson. The narrow space Hudson had built to maneuver between rooms was lighted by battery-powered lanterns, so Tanner had removed the helmet. It dangled in front of him by a strap. Hudson’s voice wasn’t completely lost to him, but the hunter of men was far enough away to make his words unintelligible.
The floor beneath his feet was covered in thick carpet that muffled his steps. Bare sheetrock made up the wall to his right while on the left were the original walls of whatever office space Hudson had truncated to build the passageway. Tanner wondered what would have awaited him had he stepped through one of the doors he had avoided. Whatever it was, it couldn’t have been good. The hi-tech helmet from the CIA toymaker had cost him a fair sum. It had already paid for itself.
The small space he was in narrowed into a passageway; that was where Hudson’s muffled voice had come from. Tanner considered putting the helmet on again to enhance his hearing but didn’t want to compromise his peripheral vision now that he had enough light to see by. He took a few steps and came across a one-way mirror. It was built into the sheetrock. The room it revealed on the other side appeared normal at first glance. It was also lit by lanterns.
There were several old desks and office chairs pushed against the far wall; the carpeted space in the middle was open and led to a second door on the other side of the room. If there was a trap involved, Tanner didn’t see it. He was about to continue along the passageway when his mind connected the dots.
There was ventilation ductwork on the ceiling. It was made from aluminum, spanned a foot in width, and was round. It appeared to continue on past the wall, but there was no trace of it on Tanner’s side of the barrier. The only thing he saw was a length of rope tied to a cleat that was screwed into the wall. He squinted as he looked at the other end of the ductwork and spotted the wiring holding it in place.
After scrutinizing the ductwork, Tanner detected that it bowed in the middle as if it contained something far heavier than circulating air. There were also straps in place. If those straps were connected to the rope, when the rope was cut, the duct work could swing down from the ceiling on the wires. Anyone in its path would have received quite a blow, depending on its weight. It was a crude trap, and one that could disable without killing.
Someone wanted him alive to question. That pointed toward it being someone after the money he’d taken from Cal Vernon, as he believed it might be.
He moved down the passageway and came across another one-way mirror. The room beyond was cluttered with office furniture. If you wanted to make it across the room to reach the door on the other side, you would have to move a desk or a filing cabinet to do so.
