CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Jana went prone, using the wall to one side and the rough riverbank to her front as cover.

She waited for someone to make a move.

She didn’t have to wait long.

A figure crept through the rushes on the near bank, crouched low, peering all around as he advanced. Jana could not see him clearly. She watched down the sights of her assault rifle, heart hammering in her chest.

She was about to kill again, something she hated, something she kept getting forced into, something necessary.

She thought of that young widow who had shown her so much hospitality even though she had so little to give. What would happen to her if the bandits took over the village? What would happen to the children after the bandits left, probably taking their mother with her, as well as all the food?

Jana couldn’t let that happen. These raiders were here by their own choice, and by their own choice, they would be killed.

But first, she had to determine that this figure creeping through the rushes was really a raider and not some villager.

The man darted across a clear patch, and in the second that Jana saw him clearly, she saw he was dressed in a new jalwar chemeez, army boots instead of the villagers’ sandals, and carried a brand new AK-47.

Plus, he was advancing, scanning the area for hidden foes, not retreating to someplace familiar.

Jana waited for her opportunity. The man had paused in a cluster of rushes, but beyond that position lay a more open area. He’d probably go prone and crawl behind the cover of a few large rocks scattered just beyond his position. She aimed for the edge of the rushes. She could see him as a vague shape inside the growth but didn’t want to lose the element of surprise by firing half blind and perhaps missing.

She lost it anyway when another bandit appeared on the far bank, spotted her, and let out a cry.

Jana flicked the fire selector lever to a three-round burst and fired into the rushes. Then she shifted her aim to the man on the far bank, who fired at her on automatic, the rounds chewing up the riverbank just below her position. She kept her head and fired a burst at him.

Missed. He ducked back behind a tree. Jana fired another burst and missed again. The man curled up behind the tree and made an almost impossible target.

She switched to single fire to get a more accurate shot. The flare of a rifle from the far bank a bit to the right of the tree showed the guy had backup. She focused on the guy behind the tree. When he showed himself to take another shot, Jana fired. He flinched and fell back, either wounded or killed, Jana couldn’t see which.

The other man on the far bank fired again, the bullet humming over Jana’s head. She also saw movement in the rushes on the nearby bank. She had only wounded that one.

She wriggled back out
