Tanya peered out from the clipped yew tree on the edge of the terrace, her breath harsh from running, her chest tight with despair. Mercifully she could see that Lisa was still in her room, partially outlined at the edge of the window.

A sigh of relief whispered from Tanya’s dry lips. She’d done the right thing, had come to the right decision. If she’d yelled at Lisa through the locked door she would have woken half the guests—and perhaps hastened Lisa’s escape down the rope. If she’d shouted out of her window as Lisa slid to the ground she wouldn’t have been able to stop her either.

At least this way Lisa’s stupid behaviour might be stopped without anyone knowing. There would be a terrible row between them—but anything was better than the alternative. If Lisa vanished on the eve of her wedding, there would be all hell to pay! And she, Tanya, would be picking up the pieces, she thought gloomily.

How could Lisa do this? It was so irresponsible. If she’d realised she didn’t love John then she should have faced him with that fact, not scurried off to hide.

Her anxious eyes surveyed the length of the rope. What did one do? Throw a suitcase down first? The whole scenario was awesome. Lisa must be pretty desperate.

‘Curse you, István, for putting doubts in her mind!’ she grated, joggling up and down to keep warm. Her bare feet felt frozen already on the cold stone.

The figure in the bedroom moved, revealing shoulders broader than Lisa possessed. Shorter hair. Tanya stopped breathing while her eyes opened as wide as they’d go. A man, her confused mind registered! A man, in Lisa’s room!

John. It was John…! ‘Hope springs eternal’, she thought with bitter self-mockery, because of course John wasn’t that bulky. She refused to contemplate the other possibility. The unmistakably caressing murmur of a male voice drifted down from the open window. A black riding boot emerged.

She blinked. István had been in a D.J. She drew in her breath sharply and the colour drained slowly from her face. Another man! One who’d climbed into Lisa’s room and made her cry. A chill iced her spine. A thug. A…rapist—about to escape.

Tanya knew that help was too far away. The man would be baring across the lawn before she could reach anyone. It was all up to her. A weapon—she needed…something…Her eyes searched frantically and lit on a bundle of stakes, left over from the erection of a marquee on the lawn. Perfect. One swipe in a highly personal place, she thought grimly, and he’d be disabled!

Nervously she tiptoed across the open terrace to the bundle and crouched down, frantically fumbling with the knots on the binder twine. But behind her she heard the slither of body on silk, feet landing on the ground and a silence so profound that it lifted every hair on the back of her neck.

In sheer terror, she straightened slowly, clutching the stake like grim death, her body now prickling with sweat at the sound of leather boots creaking in a steady, measured tread towards her.
