âItâs not the news you want to hear,â Ted Terry said, âbut thatâs the truth of it.â
Hannah sat at the head of the table, and Carissa had joined them for the meal while Juanita cared for Lucas and Laura. The Terrys had come with news of another Indian attack.
âThe Cheyenne are working with the Comanche and Kiowa. Itâs been quite bad up and down the plains. The sheriff told me they just learned that there was a massacre of several families in the panhandle area.â
âAre you going to stay at your ranch or will you join us here?â Hannah asked.
âFor now weâll go back and do our best to defend the place.â
âBut why? You neednât risk your lives. Just come here and stay with us,â Hannah insisted. âWeâll be stronger together, and you know that the Comanche have long respected our ranch.â
âIâll take it under advisement,â Ted promised. He glanced at Marietta, who looked none too happy. âFor now, however, I have to go back and do what I can to secure whatâs mine.â
âWell, at least eat your fill before you go. I wouldnât want to send you off on an empty stomach.â
Ted laughed. âNo chance of that. I know my way to the trough.â
Carissa felt Mariettaâs hand on her arm and startled. âIâm sorry. Did you say something?â
Marietta nodded. âI wondered how your sister was doing. Hannah said sheâs been quite ill.â
âShe is and I must say Iâm so frightened. Sheâs desperately weak, and itâs hard to get any kind of fluids into her, but the doctor says thatâs critical.â She felt such a sense of dread. âI donât know if I could bear it should Laura . . .â
âHush, now,â Marietta told her. âYou gain nothing by fretting over the matter. Give it to the Lord and let Him work.â
Carissa felt so hopeless. âIâm trying. Iâm really trying.â
âThatâs all the Lord asks of us. Now, you need to eat more than that to keep up your strength. And where is that little gal of yours? I understand sheâs had a birthday and turned two.â
âShe seems more like four or five,â Hannah interjected. âIâve never seen anyone so smart and active. That child is everywhere at once and talks a blue streak.â
âItâs true,â Carissa replied. âBut as for where the children areâthey ate earlier and now Marty is putting them down for naps. She has been an absolute godsend. I know we would never have managed without her.â
Marietta bobbed her head. âMy mother always said that there was never anyone too young to learn how to help. She had me shelling peas when I was just a little one. Life sometimes necessitates we grow up fast and out hereâitâs a rule.â
âI hate seeing them grow up too fast,â Hannah said with a sigh. âIâve been so worried about Andy. I never wanted him to go on the cattle drive, as you know. I received a message from William once the cattle were safely delivered to Abilene. Apparently everyone is fine, but I wonât really rest until theyâre all back home.
