I lift my groggy head, and I wince from the aching crick in my neck. I must have dozed off curled up in a ball next to Rebel’s makeshift doggy bed.

I’m not sure how long I’ve been asleep, but the blazing bayou sun is showing no mercy, playing a relentless game of peek-a-boo with the thread worn towels draped across the windows.

I stretch in effort to loosen my stiff limbs and crane my head to make sure the kids haven’t moved.

Hot tears spring to my heavy eyes when my gaze lands on the rocking chair, now busting at the seams since Rebel climbed up to sleep next to her big brother.

He’s wrapped her up under his arm and holds her close, comforting her with his young strength. Maturing quicker than any boy should ever have to.

A faint knock coming from downstairs sends me scrambling up to my socks, and my pulse skyrockets throughout my bloodstream when one foot slips rounding the bottom step. I work to recover my composure as the knocking quickly turns into pounding.

“I’m coming,” I try to shout, but my voice cracks. “Ahem,” I clear my throat. “Coming.”

“Hey! Open up!”

I fiddle with the locks, not that the old door is very sturdy.

Just the opposite. If someone really wanted in, all it would take is one, good shove.

“I said, I’m coming.” I manage to get it open, and the chime dings as a scowling man in dockers and a polo pullover brushes past me.

“The sign says twenty-four hours. I wanted to get an early start.”

“An early start?” I arch my brow.

He scoffs, clearly assuming I’m an idiot. “On the water?” He remarks, dripping with smartass. “You are a marina, correct?”

I want nothing more than to put this sexist asshole in his place, but I don’t. I have to think of Gus. This place is his pride and joy. His livelihood. His and Mary’s legacy.

“Yes, sir. Of course. What can I help you with this morning?”

“Well, we’re gonna need a fill up. My girl and I have been waiting for this all week. The damn crocodiles are going to be gone before we get out there. And some bait, whatever kind you got should be good.”

Crocodiles?

“Um, yeah. We have one working pump since an accident, so there’s that. But, are you sure you’re wanting to head out into that swamp without a guide?”

“What the hell’s that supposed to mean?” He cocks out a hip, and I notice his fancy deck shoes.

“First off, the gators are no joke out here. You’d better not take out those rancid leg quarters as bait unless you’re prepared to shoot the son-of-a-bitch right between the eyes. Because they can, and will, jump right into that boat. Is that something you’re ready for, sir? For your girl’s sake, I sure as shit hope the answer is hell yes.” I hear it crystal clear, the voice in my head as I channel Gus’s crotchety attitude.

The man’s square chin pretty much hits the floor when the bell dings for a second time.
