“Where are we going?” Emmett asked as Nathan drove.

“You’ll see. Just relax.”

“I could get used to this relaxing thing,” he sighed. “I thought it would drive me crazy, but my body is looser than it’s been in ages. And that breakfast,” he groaned. “Amy’s a keeper.”

“I thought you’d like her. Yeah, that food was the best I’ve tasted in ages.”

“You haven’t had mine,” Emmett grinned.

“Is that an invitation? Are you going to cook for me sometime soon?”

“If you keep doing the things you’re doing, I could see it,” he laughed. “Honestly, this has been the best day so far. A relaxing bubble bath, first-class food, you taking over all of the bar responsibilities. I don’t know how you’re going to top it.”

“I have a few tricks up my sleeve. You’ll see.”

“That doesn’t sound ominous at all.”

“Well, we are driving through a bunch of what is essentially open land and cornfields.”

Emmett groaned. “How am I hanging out with someone who has such a morbid sense of humor?”

“Admit it, you wouldn’t change me for the world.”

“Drive the car,” Emmett said as he fought off Nathan’s seeking hand. “Or I’ll crash us both.”

Nathan clicked his tongue. “So dramatic. Besides, we’re here. What do you think?”

Emmett glanced out of the car window and shot up straight. He saw the way his eyes lit up. For once, Emmett didn’t look stressed, he looked like an excited child.

“Rose Farms Apple Orchard,” he read as they turned into the parking lot and Nathan came to a stop. “I haven’t been to an apple orchard since I was a teenager. Oh man, I didn’t even realize how much I missed it until now.”

“Jaron told me you two went years ago and you loved it. I figured it’s the perfect way to spend the afternoon before we have to head into work tonight.”

“Speaking of work, and don’t give me that look just five seconds, who’s taking care of things while we’re here?”

“Jaron. Who by the way I think would make an amazing manager once we go back to South River. He really knows how to direct people where they need to be, and he’s picked up a lot from you.”

“That’s why he’s my best friend,” Emmett smiled. “He’s always been there for me. Come on, let’s go inside. I want to see everything. Ooh, I want cider first. Wait, no I want to pick apples. What do I want?”

Nathan laughed. He hopped out of the truck and rounded it to Emmett’s side just as the omega shut the door. Emmett slipped his arm through Nathan’s as they strolled inside.

“You can have whatever you want,” Nathan said. “In whatever order you want it. Today’s about doing whatever you want to do.”

Emmett bounced on his heels a bit. “This is the best thing anyone’s ever done for me. Let’s go get apples first.”

“Let’s do it.”

Emmett took off and Nathan smiled as he dashed over to grab a bag and start picking. How was it possible that he’d only seen this carefree side of Emmett a handful of times? And never quite as free as he was at that exact moment.
