Chapter Seven

To her relief—and disappointment—Bryce didn’t stop by the store to offer his services the next day. Or the day after that, either.

Feeling a little let down, Lisa told herself she was being ridiculous. This was just what she wanted. To be left alone, to get her store ready in peace and to keep her life moving along the track she’d taken. A track that exclusively involved her daughter, her mother and her business. If there was any time left over, well, a woman could do with a little of her own space now and again, too. Nothing wrong with a little alone time. There was absolutely no need for a man with wavy, dark blond hair and eyes the color of wild shamrocks in her life. None at all.

Still, every so often over the course of those next two days, she found herself looking over toward the front door. Just in case Bryce decided to launch another invasion. After all, it never hurt to be prepared.

With each passing hour of each day, it became increasingly apparent that there was nothing to be prepared for.

The only people who arrived at her shop-in-progress had deliveries to make, except for the manager of the mall and he only stopped by late the second afternoon to see how things were coming along.

Struggling to maneuver yet another large shipment of toys to the rear of the shop, Lisa realized she missed Bryce. Or at least his muscle. She decided, slashing through the cellophane tape at the top of the box, that maybe she’d actually finally succeeded in getting her message across to him. The one that said she wasn’t interested. Nope, not a whit. With a yank, she opened the box. Stuffed animals came pouring out.

If she were being honest with herself, there was a small part of her that was irritated that Bryce had given up so easily.

With a sigh, she ran her hand through her hair. “Damn it, Lisa, make up your mind. Either you want him interested, or you don’t. If you do, you’d better get your act together and if you don’t, well, congratulations, you’ve won.”

The odd thing of it was, she didn’t feel like much of a winner.

She forced herself to focus on her work and not the man who’d inadvertently—or possibly on purpose—messed with her mind. She worked steadily, finding places to house the latest shipment of toy citizens to her store. By the time the last stuffed animal had found housing, it was half past seven.

Tired, looking at her watch, Lisa decided to call it a day. The store, thanks to her own industry and the one whirlwind day that she’d spent working side by side with Bryce, was really getting in shape. She was ahead of even her own far from conservative estimates.

Locking the door, she looked at the sign in the window proclaiming the grand opening date. If things kept going the way they were, she’d be ready before then. Maybe she should see about moving ahead the opening date, she mused.
