Don’t Dismiss Emojis

Widely available since Apple released its first set on the iPhone keyboard in 2008, emojis are a wonderful lightweight visual vocabulary you can use to add expression to what you share.

- Creative punctuation. Linguist Gretchen McCulloch, who writes about how the internet expands and changes language, describes emojis as “creative punctuation” that add color and a human touch to our expressions: “You’d feel weird having a conversation in a monotone with your hands tied behind your back, but that’s kind of what it’s like texting in plain vanilla Standard English.”

- When words aren’t enough. A recent Fast Company article noted that even in business settings, words aren’t always enough: “Teams who are accustomed to working remotely won’t always get a humorous reference or sarcasm, in large part because they only know each other digitally. So it’s no wonder that emojis have become a common crutch to try to express our feelings.”

- A conversation closer. Although emojis are usually the province of social media and texting, they’re an efficient way to close out an email thread, with or (or another appropriately informal, but clearly understood, emoji).
