CHAPTER SIX

THANKFULLY the rest of Sarah’s day was frantically busy and so she was able to successfully put all thoughts of Jamie Brennan on hold.

To her delight Sister asked her to take charge of a woman who was being admitted to the labour ward. It was a straightforward, though protracted, labour and an hour after Sarah was supposed to have been off duty she was still there, gently encouraging the woman in her breathing and taking turns with the husband to comfortingly rub the small of the woman’s back.

Sister came in at five-thirty. ‘How are we doing?’ she asked Sarah.

‘Everything has been going smoothly,’ answered Sarah, ‘and Mrs O’Donnell is eight centimetres dilated.’

‘Hmm,’ observed Sister, as she cast an experienced eye over the woman. ‘This could still take some time. First baby and all that. Do you want to go off duty now, Sarah? Let one of the afternoon staff take over?’

Sarah saw the disappointment written on the woman’s face, a disappointment that she felt keenly, too. During childbirth the relationship between mother and midwife was very close and very intense and most women preferred the same midwife to stay with them throughout their labour. The midwife preferred it, too. Professionally and emotionally it was very frustrating to have assisted from the very beginning and then miss out on the best bit of all—seeing the birth of a baby!

‘I’ll stay for a bit longer—if you don’t mind, Sister?’

Sister smiled broadly. ‘Mind? Why on earth should I mind? Stay as long as you like, Sarah!’

A baby girl was dutifully delivered half an hour later and Sarah had her photo taken with mother and baby and accepted a glass of champagne from the proud father.

But it was almost six-thirty when she arrived back at her room and changed from her uniform into jeans and a T-shirt in double-quick time. Whatever else she did—supper date or no supper date—she simply had to go shopping. She still had absolutely nothing in her kitchen bar half a bottle of sherry...

One of the other nurses from the block had told her where to go for provisions and she found the shop quite easily. It was quite a walk there and back but she felt much better afterwards for the fresh air and exercise.

She lugged her carrier bags into the small kitchen and unpacked fruit and vegetables, butter, cheese, ham, bread, coffee, tea, biscuits and yoghurt. She had also bought rice and pasta and a couple of jars of tomato sauce for her store cupboard. Just in case...

In case of what? she asked herself mockingly. In case Jamie Brennan starts popping in regularly for one of your home-cooked meals?

And only respect for other people’s property stopped her from slamming the fridge door shut after putting the last of her shopping away!

The room still looked unlived-in. It was not really the impression that she liked giving. She had not unpacked half the little photos and ornaments that she had brought with her from home but it was getting on for eight o’clock and she would not have time tonight.
