Chapter Eight

It had never even occurred to him. It had never once occurred to Brant that his mate might be fighting this natural thing that was happening between them because he’d been hurt before. By who? A previous lover? His family? He never spoke about his family. To be absolutely fair, they’d only just recently started to really talk, so why would they speak about either of their families?

Brant sure as hell didn’t want to think about his own family. He knew what it was like to have abusive parents. He knew that helplessness, that anger that built up into an energy that he’d poured into his pack. A pack that he’d been kicked out of, betrayed by even them, and forced to turn rogue with his brothers.

They weren’t his real brothers. Colt and Austen weren’t related by blood, but they were his brothers in every other way that mattered, and that was the story he was going to stick with.

The fact that they’d been taken in by another alpha, tricked into doing something terrible by attacking Jake and kidnapping Morgan, had been another betrayal that had nearly destroyed them.

But Jake hadn’t killed them. He’d taken them into his pack after Jake came into power was probably the only thing that kept Brant’s head on straight these days.

That and his mate.

Brant put away their dishes when they finished with them, and then looked through the slew of games there were available to play.

World War Z, a board game based on the movie, Boss Monster, a card game based on old retro video games, and it looked pretty cool, and then there was a version of Risk that took place in the distant future.

Whatever happened to Monopoly?

Whatever. He brought them upstairs so he and his mate could have a couple of games together.

Surprisingly, these new games were fun. The dour mood in the room eventually turned into something lighter, more uplifting as Brant and Josh laughed over their victories and bemoaned their losses to each other.

“I wonder what the owner of this place would say if he knew we were staying here?” Josh asked at one point, putting down another trap card to overtake the hero trying to get into his dungeon.

Brant shrugged. “Don’t worry about it. If someone tries coming in and sees us, I’ll just turn into a wolf in front of him.”

“Are you allowed to do that?” Josh asked. “I thought there was supposed to be some super secret code in place to keep things like that from happening. Won’t it be a problem if people find out?”

Brant shrugged. “It can be, but you’d be shocked at how many humans see a transformation in their lifetimes, only to shrug it off as a hallucination, or they were high, having a nightmare. Anything that doesn’t fit in with their world view gets rejected.”

“Huh,” Josh said, looking pretty thoughtful in that moment. “I guess that’s pretty lucky.”
