Chapter Nine

When we got back to the academy the next morning, no one seemed to have noticed we were gone. Kip told me that he’d bribed the headmaster not to notice we were away and the teachers didn’t seem to care enough to wonder.

I found myself dragging through my classes. The girls were gone, so there was no bullying. It was peaceful, except for the odd looks I got from the other students. They were still whispering about my being with four guys.

I couldn’t really blame them for the gossip. Especially since I’d vanished with one of the guys for two weeks. As long as no one bothered me, though, I was good.

With the girls gone, I was back in my room in the dorm. There was no point in getting in trouble again with the headmaster for crashing with the guys.

That didn’t mean that I slept alone, though. Each night, one of them would slip through my window and curl up with me in my bed. I had to admit, after sleeping with Jackson in California every night, I didn’t much like sleeping alone anymore. The bed felt empty and cold without one of the guys in it with me.

It was the full moon a few days after we got back. Alex was anxious and bouncy leading up to it.

“I feel like my skin is all itchy,” he complained.

“That’s just the moon pulling on your wolf,” Kip explained. “You’ll feel it every month, coming up on the full moon.”

“Can I just change now?” Alex asked, pacing and scratching his arms.

I watched him worriedly. There was something off about him this month. Last time, he’d been so excited to change, now he was acting more like a drug addict needing a fix.

“Is this normal?” I whispered to Jackson, who sat wrapped around me on the couch.

“Sometimes.” He shrugged and watched my brother. “Maybe it’s different for the bitten.”

“I don’t like this.” Alex looked at me with eyes that were black from his expanded pupils. “I want to change.”

“Okay, I’ll take him out,” Kip said. “We’ll head to the forest and do a little run.”

“Is he going to be okay?” I asked Kip.

“I’ll watch him, don’t worry.”

“Be careful, Alex.” I got up to hug him and he twisted away from me.

“I don’t want to be touched right now,” he snapped.

My heart broke. My brother had never outright rejected me. He’d always let me comfort him and hold him, even when he thought I was being silly. And now he was pushing me away like I was evil.

I stepped back, hurt.

“Come on, kid.” Kip led Alex out the door of the penthouse. “We’ll be back at dawn.”

“Is it safe for them to be running around as wolves before the full moon?” I asked anxiously.

“They’ll be fine,” Forrest said.

“There’s still two days until the full moon,” I wandered to the window and looked out. I could see the figures of Kip and Alex walking through the moonlight toward the forest.

“It’s okay, Luz. It’s like puberty, everyone is a little different,” Brad told me.
