LILY SENSED SOMEONE before she opened her eyes, sensed the disturbance by the wardrobe. Not Jason. Where was he? He’d been right beside her when she went to sleep.

She controlled her heart rate and breathing. She’d locked the door. Her weapons were in the drawer beside her—the downside to securing them away. But she had a small pocketknife beneath her pillow. She hadn’t thought it safe, but Jason had insisted she keep something to comfort herself. This one needed two hands to open it, so she couldn’t flick it out immediately.

Almost inaudible sounds indicated someone searching. She gripped the pocketknife in her hand and slowly opened her eyes, already knowing who she’d find. James searched through her clothes, checking every seam meticulously. Jason had cleared out space in his drawers for her meager amount of clothing but most of her gear remained hidden in the bag beneath the bed.

She sat up slowly. James faced away from her. A foolish move to expose his back. The room glowed softly with light leaking around the curtains, and he used a little penlight. She debated whether to sneak up on him with the blade or to ask what he wanted. She knew which option she preferred.

“Find anything interesting?”

James whirled around, his eyes glinting in the dim light with a cold hardness that informed her he could kill if he needed to. She returned the look. Perhaps the blade would have been the better way to approach this. Her hand rested on it beneath the pillow.

“Where’s the rest of your stuff?”

“I didn’t escape my father with much.”

“Your ID?”

“I don’t have any.”

“Everyone has ID of some sort.”

“I don’t drive, have any loans, or trust the government.”

“I don’t give a damn if you do or not—there are certain rules. Like your IRD number.”

She lifted the corner of her lip slightly. “In my head, and no, I’m not giving it to you. I pay my taxes.” At least, I will from now on.

“You’re asking us to defend you, and yet you won’t tell us anything more than a first name and a story about being abused by your father.” He slammed a hand down on the desk he’d been using as a table to search her clothes. “Those two detectives you've talked to won’t talk to me—won’t tell me anything. One of them hates my family, and he’s going to use this to try and destroy us. Our mom’s lucky to be alive and able to walk.” He stepped closer, raising a shaking fist. “I’ll not have you causing any more trouble. Someone died last night. Do you understand? The whole community will mourn the loss of a beloved teacher and friend. This isn’t a game—it isn’t about you and some vendetta you have. An abusive father doesn’t send masked gunmen after his daughter.”

“This one does.” She met his eyes. Guilt burned a path through her, but she refused to give in. She was doing everything she could. “Don’t threaten me. You might think you’re king of the jungle, but you’re not.
