CHAPTER 1

“She was fired?” Marc shouted, his face turning red. “Savannah is going to freak out! She adores Flora.”

“I know.” Jared cringed. It was bad enough he’d messed up with Flora again, but this time his two best friends were going to suffer as a result, too, and that was what pissed him off the most. “Yeah. Her boss found out about her relationship with me and accused her of being unprofessional or some shit like that.”

“Well, didn’t she explain you two had dated before? This wasn’t a case of jumping into bed with a member of her client’s wedding party.” Marc paced the office, running his hand over his military crew cut every few moments.

“She tried. Jennifer didn’t want to hear it.” Jared frowned. “This is all my fault. She told me this could happen. She told me we shouldn’t get involved while you were her client, and I didn’t listen. I just kept pushing and pushing.” He stood from behind his desk and went to the window, staring down at all the people bustling along the sidewalk. “And what’s worse, when she called me on it, I tried to push the blame off onto her.” He blew out a breath and turned around to face Marc.

“Yeah, no offense, man, but you really know how to keep fucking up with this woman.”

Jared flipped Marc off then chuckled. “I let her walk out of my life. Again.”

Marc shook his head and laced his fingers on top of his head. “Talk about a goddamned mess.”

“No shit.”

“There’s got to be something you can do. Can’t you call her boss, make some sort of deal with her again?” The desperation in Marc’s voice was unmistakable and it twisted Jared’s gut to think he was responsible for this—all of this.

“I considered that. Hell, I even offered to Flora to do that. She didn’t think it was such a great idea.”

“It might be her only option.”

“I swear that woman is so independent, sometimes to her own detriment. She won’t take my help.”

“She might not take your help, but she can’t do a damn thing to stop me from doing something.”

Jared stared at his friend, doubt creeping into his mind. “What are you planning to do?”

“I have no idea what the plan is now that Flora’s gone. Will they assign us a new planner? Savannah won’t go for that, so I’m going to march into that office first thing tomorrow morning and tell them if we don’t have Flora, we don’t want anyone. We’ll leave. Call the whole thing off between us and Wescott’s.”

Jared raised an eyebrow.

“If they refuse to bring her back, we’ll demand our money back and hire Flora as an independent planner.”

Jared’s brow stood tall as he listened. He liked the idea and smirked, impressed with Marc’s plan. It was actually quite good. He broke into a full blown smile and nodded. “Do it. And then once you have, I’ll pay Jennifer a little visit myself.”

Marc laughed. “Good. We’ll teach her a lesson.
