Chapter Four

Lorn caught a familiar scent and stirred as he woke up. He went still again when he realized he couldn’t move because someone held him. He turned even though he knew it was Shigure. The kitsune had both arms clamped around Lorn’s body and his head pressed into the middle of Lorn’s back. Lorn tried to free himself, but it wasn’t working.

“Shigure? Wake up!” He wiggled some more and pried Shigure’s arms open.

Shigure released him but didn’t move away. “You can’t be tired of me touching you already.”

Lorn sat up and rubbed his right eye. “I believe I made it clear last night that I wanted some space.”

Shigure wadded a pillow under his chin, almost looking like a pouting child. “I had a bad dream,” he said quietly.

“A bad dream?”

“Yes. It was about you. I woke up and had to make sure you were safe.” He gazed up, his expression hardening now. “I’m never letting you out of my sight again. There’s the witch to worry about, plus I have enemies of my own.”

“What kind of enemies?” Lorn propped on one elbow as he faced Shigure.

“A couple of former lovers. And there’s even a demon I insulted years ago. He might take notice of you because you’re half-demon.” He reached out and cupped Lorn’s face. “It frightened me. It was too real. I felt as if I’d actually lost you.”

“You’d recover.”

Shigure ran his hand into Lorn’s hair. “I’d have no reason to live.”

“Why?” Say it. I believe Inari, but I have to hear you say it.

Instead of answering him, Shigure rose from the bed and dragged Lorn into the bathroom with him. Every room in Inari’s retreat was large and lavish, and the bathrooms were no exception. Shigure eyed the large shower and grinned as he shed the simple pants he’d been sleeping in. He turned the shower on and adjusted the four heads before coming over to Lorn and unbuttoning his pajama top. Lorn didn’t protest as he was undressed, watching Shigure.

“I asked a question,” Lorn said as Shigure pulled him into the shower.

“And I’m answering it.” Shigure pressed him to the wall and kissed him.
