“Mr. Hudson, I have Darden Peco on the line for you.”

Jonah glanced away from the trinity of three monitors he had perched in the center of his desk. He’d been sitting in his office watching the movements of the global markets, making notes on an old-fashioned yellow legal pad with a pen he’d gotten at the drugstore on his walk to work. A pack of six cost him just under two dollars. Glancing between the screens, he sometimes felt like the conductor of an orchestra. Each section was doing different things — oil was going down, bonds were stagnant, stocks, particularly in the mining sector, were seeing a slight rise. It was organizing and understanding all of that information that brought his investment strategy together. And with nearly half a trillion dollars to play with, it wasn’t hard to win.

The offices of Desert Indigo, given that it was the largest operating hedge fund in the world, were surprisingly modest. When the fund had hit the one hundred-million-dollar mark, Jonah had asked his team to find a single floor in an office building in downtown Manhattan. It seemed like the right place to be for a hedge fund. They found an older building, one that needed a good deal of rehab in order to make it presentable, but could be rented for pennies on the dollar. After walking through it, Jonah looked at his assistant and the architect and said, “I don’t want anything fancy. When you size the offices, make sure each one of them is exactly the same size, including mine.”

The architect frowned, “Including yours?”

Jonah nodded, “Desert Indigo hasn’t succeeded because of me. It has succeeded because of all of us working together. My office shouldn’t be any bigger or more opulent than anyone else’s. See to that, please.”

The office that Jonah Hudson ended up with was exactly as he requested, the same size as every other office on the floor. He didn’t keep a large staff. At that moment, it ranged between eighteen and twenty-two people, depending on the project he had going at the moment. He had a personal assistant, Cynthia, who helped him keep his schedule organized, managed paperwork, fielded phone calls and helped arrange events, but that was really the only staff that was dedicated to him. The remainder of the staff worked on investor relations, communication, and event planning, with the bulk of the personnel working in research.

And although Jonah relied heavily on his research team, he ultimately made all of the decisions himself. Desert Indigo either soared or sunk on his say-so.

Blinking, Jonah pulled off his glasses and wiped his eyes before responding to his assistant, “You said Darden?”

“Yes sir,” came the voice through the speaker.

“Put him through. Thank you.”

In addition to Jonah’s sensibilities about office size, he also was a stickler for manners. “Manners matter,” his mother used to say, God rest her soul, he thought.

“Jonah?”

“Mr. Peco! How nice to hear from you today.” Jonah quickly opened up Darden’s investment account on his computer and scanned it.
