Anne Patrick, known for her “Sweet” Edge of Your Seat Romantic Suspense, has penned more than a dozen novels. She’s a confessed suspense junkie with a bad habit of mixing chocolate and diet colas when writing, which can, and often does, lead to mayhem. Anne has an alter ego by the name of Kinzie Monroe, who writes Inspirational Romance. Anne, you might say, is the dark side of Kinzie. Anne’s books may be darker in subject matter, but they all carry messages of hope and faith. Born and raised in Oklahoma, she now makes her home in Kansas. I see you were born in Oklahoma. Was your particular hometown a good venue for an aspiring writer?
I think so. Shawnee was home to several well-known authors. Not to mention a famous astronaut, Gordon Cooper, and of course the very well-known actor, Brad Pitt.
Did growing up in a boring neighborhood help to spark ideas for stories? Provide a creative outlet for your fiction? Sometimes boredom teaches us how to create our own excitement.
Yes on both counts. My imagination served me well as kid. My friends and I were the neighborhood detectives. And when we got bored solving cases, we’d go on archeological digs in search of hidden treasure. Indiana Jones had nothing on us.
Does listening to music help you concentrate? Stephen King once told me he listens to AC/DC to help him concentrate. {laughs}.
Well I can do without AC/DC, but give me some Ozzy and I’m good to go. Actually I listen to all types of music, depending on my WIP. Music helps me to relax and shut out the real world.
When someone asked you why you write, you said “Because I have to.” Meaning?
I have all these ideas running through my mind, along with the voices of my characters, if I didn’t have an outlet I’d be in big trouble. I’m not truly happy unless I’m working on something. Writing is like an extension of me. I’d be lost without my creative muse.
Do you ever find yourself becoming attached to your characters when you write? Miss them once the book is finished?
Often times, when I come to the end of a project, I do dread writing The End. I can’t help not becoming attached to my characters. I sleep, eat, and live with them 24/7 during the course of the story. When I’m in The Zone, my characters speak to me and tell me their story. I hear dialogue and see scenes playing out in my mind’s eye. So when I come to the end, it is difficult sometimes to let them go. But I have to, because by that time the characters in my next story are starting to talk to me.
You strike me as the type to be a real “nitpicker” about authenticity and realism, yet you don’t go overboard with subjects such as steamy love scenes. Is that one of the signatures of the “edgy” subgenre? Knowing when to remain within Christian boundaries?
I believe so.
